Silver Hill Fellowship

Silver Hill Hospital is a private, not-for-profit, 129-bed psychiatric hospital with approximately 2,400 admissions annually. It is located in New Canaan, CT, 45 minutes from New Haven. We offer a year-long, PGY-5 Fellowship position in affiliation with the Yale School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. Given the variety of clinical programs at Silver Hill, each fellow can shape the year to further his/her specific interests.

The hospital offers an unusual experience in several respects:

  • We have both inpatient psychiatry and five longer-term residential treatment programs, each of a month or more. Almost all of the patients in the residential programs were first admitted to our inpatient program, providing the trainee with the opportunity to provide 5 weeks or more of hospital-based treatment.
  • Our residential programs are intensive therapeutic programs organized into several tracks, including (1)addiction, (2) dual disorders. (3) severe personality disorders that are unstable and difficult to manage (this is a DBT program, primarily for patients with borderline personally disorders), (4) psychotic disorders, and (5) an adolescent program. Depending on the applicant’s interest we will create an educational experience based on one or more of these tracks.
  • We have an unusually experienced, skilled full-time staff. For example, 8 of our 11 psychiatrists are doubly or triply board certified.
  • Demographically, patients admitted to Silver Hill Hospital are virtually all insured with either commercial carriers or Medicare.

The Fellow in this program will spend 4 days a week at Silver Hill Hospital and 1 day a week at the Department of Psychiatry in New Haven. The Fellow will have a relatively small case load, so as to make it possible to pick up patients admitted to the inpatient service, keep them after they transfer to a residential treatment program and attend rounds and clinical meeting in both the inpatient and residential services. In addition, part of the expectation at our hospital is that the psychiatrists will meet with families.

The Fellow will have frequent, including daily, supervision from various members of our full-time staff. The Fellow will attend a biweekly journal club with readings that focus on his/her educational topic for the year.

We can also offer additional, adjunctive educational opportunities to further the specific interests a Fellow may have. These might include administrative psychiatry, ECT or other specific topics.
