The Hispanic Clinic / La Clínica Hispana

The Hispanic Clinic of the Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC), is a collaborative endeavor between the Yale University Department of Psychiatry and the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS). Since its inception in 1973, the Hispanic Clinic has provided outpatient mental health and addiction services to the monolingual Latino community of the greater New Haven area. The clinic staff is bilingual/bicultural and representative of the diversity of Latino culture. Clients are self-referred or referred by health care facilities and/or other local community agencies.

Treatment Programs

The Hispanic Clinic provides the following recovery-oriented services: triage, outpatient therapy, and specialty groups including alcohol, domestic violence, bereavement, and co-occurring disorders. All clients are evaluated and treated by a multidisciplinary team that includes bilingual/bicultural psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, nurses, substance abuse counselors, and case managers. In addition, clients have access to rehabilitation, educational and prevention programs. The clinic also helps coordinate referrals to community resources, including vocational agencies, primary health care providers and consumer initiatives.

Training

The Hispanic Clinic is a training site for the Yale Department of Psychiatry.

Research

In line with the teaching mission of the Connecticut Mental Health Center and the Yale School of Medicine, the Hispanic Clinic is committed to the study of mental illness and addictions in Latino populations aiming at contributing to the development of evidence-based practices.

Eligibility

Clients must be 18 years and older, monolingual, receiving state assistance or without entitlements and in need of mental health and/or addiction services.
