De Aquino to participate in 2018 Career Development Institute for Psychiatry

January 18, 2018

João P. De Aquino, MD, a fourth-year resident in the Yale Department of Psychiatry, has been selected to participate in the 2018 Career Development Institute (CDI) for Psychiatry.

The application process for the two-year program was competitive; De Aquino was selected from a national pool of research fellows and junior faculty.

The program aims to enhance the careers of junior researchers in academic psychiatry through training related to both the direct and indirect aspects of an academic career.

Participants will complete online activities to prepare for a four-day seminar workshop at the University of Pittsburgh. That will be followed by two years of long-distance career mentoring and webinars, and annual career and program evaluation surveys.

“In addition to the outstanding research mentorship at Yale, obtaining extramural mentorship on attitudinal skills such as negotiating and career decisions could be key at my career stage, potentially accelerating my transition to independence,” De Aquino said. “The CDI will also be a terrific opportunity of enhancing my cooperation with the research community of early career investigators. With this network of mentors at various stages of their academic careers, I hope to be able to request feedback and identify areas of knowledge of skills that need advancement. I also hope to apply the insights gained by contributing to this scientific community.”

De Aquino received the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry’s Early Career Addiction Psychiatry Award in 2017 for the quality of his research and commitment to the field of Addiction Psychiatry.
