Match Day Is a Success at Yale School of Medicine

“Ten, nine, eight …” A loud and energetic countdown could be heard just before noon on March 15—Match Day— on Harkness Lawn at Yale School of Medicine (YSM). The YSM MD Class of 2024, surrounded by family, friends, faculty, and staff, excitedly waited to find out where they would train as residents. For the first time, students’ Match envelopes were sorted according to their YSM College, at tables decorated in each college’s color: Blue, Green, Gold, Orange, Purple, and Red.

When the clock struck noon, Jean and David W. Wallace Dean and C.N.H. Long Professor of Internal Medicine Nancy J. Brown, MD, rang a cow bell, and students tore open their Match envelopes. Then shouts of joy filled the air. The excitement reflected the class’s 102 successful matches.

The residency programs with the most matches were:

• Yale New Haven Medical Center residency programs, including its one-year preliminary programs, with 26 students matching;
• Harvard-affiliated programs, including Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Mount Auburn Hospital, with 12 members of the class matching;
• University of California (San Francisco) programs, and affiliated programs, with 11 students matching;
• Stanford Health Care-Stanford University program, with nine students matching.

Other programs with a significant number of matches were Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, with five students matching, and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, also with five students matching. Four students matched at Duke University Medical Center and four matched at Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education.

“It is a great day for the Class of 2024 and for Yale School of Medicine. I am so proud of our students and grateful to our faculty and community for helping them reach their goals,” said Brown.

Associate Dean for Student Affairs John Francis, MD, PhD, added, “Our students never cease to amaze me. I am so incredibly proud of their accomplishments while at Yale and outstanding Match results for residency training. What wonderful and well-deserved rewards that reflect the culmination of years of diligence, service, leadership, fortitude, and desire.”

Internal medicine residencies drew the largest number of students (28), followed by psychiatry (13), diagnostic radiology (seven), general surgery (six), neurological surgery (six), and otolaryngology (six). Students will be located in 21 states and the District of Columbia, spread across the country from Hawaii, to Florida, to Massachusetts.

“Whether it be here at Yale or at residency programs across the country, I know our students will carry the incredible foundational experiences with faculty and classmates here at YSM into their future careers,” said Jessica Illuzzi, MD, MS, deputy dean for education and Harold W. Jockers Professor of Medical Education and professor of obstetrics, gynecology & reproductive sciences.
