Short-Term Research

This funding is only available to flex-year medical students who are engaged in full-time research, defined as 40 hours per week during normal business hours. Short-term research stipends are awarded at a rate of $2,447 for each four-week period. This funding is competitive, and students must apply for a minimum of four consecutive weeks and a maximum of twelve consecutive weeks in any given period.

Apply for Short-Term Research Funding

Step One

Download the Faculty Mentor Agreement Form for students conducting short-term research. Students must review and complete this form with their research mentor. The completed form must be submitted with the student’s research funding application.

Step Two

Log into Elentra and complete the appropriate Short-Term Research Funding Application. The OSR will provide students with detailed instructions for submitting their application and all required supporting materials through the Elentra platform prior to the submission deadline.

Deadlines/Important Dates

Students should submit their application for short-term research funding in Elentra by the applicable deadline listed below. Students who are unable to meet a stated deadline are required to submit a completed Short Term Funding Deadline Extension Request Form to the OSR at least one week in advance of the relevant deadline. Only students who meet the specified conditions, which align with YSM educational policies, qualify for consideration of an extension.

Applications or extension requests received after a submission deadline will not be eligible to receive funding from the OSR.

Students planning to conduct international research must contact the YSM Global Health Program (global.health@yale.edu) at least six months in advance of travel and beginning research to receive guidance on pre-departure planning. Students conducting international research are required to provide documentation of both Yale and international site approval, as well as register their research with the YSM Global Health Program. For students planning to apply for short-term research funding from the OSR for international research, funding will be contingent upon verification from the YSM Global Health Program that all requirements have been met. This ensures that students conducting international research receive the necessary support.

Internal Funding Opportunity

Paul Leong, MD ’99 and Judy Chang, MD Interdisciplinary Student Research Award

This award supports Yale medical students pursuing research that requires an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on mentorship and resources from across Yale’s schools and departments. Designed to address questions with social, economic, cultural, and scientific significance, it encourages projects at the intersection of medicine and fields such as law, management, environment, divinity, computer science, and the arts. Medical students planning to conduct interdisciplinary short-term research with a primary YSM faculty mentor and additional faculty from other Yale schools (e.g., Architecture, Environment, Graduate School, Divinity, Nursing, Public Health, Management, etc.) should note this on their short-term research funding application for consideration.

Selected External Funding Opportunities

Listed below are links for additional sources of funding for short term research. It is important that you read the requirements carefully for each fellowship, as they have different eligibility requirements and deadlines. Students can also visit the Yale Center for International and Professional Experience to find a searchable database of fellowships and funding.

Important Note: If you are planning to apply for a short term fellowship at an outside institution or organization, and you will receive funding from a source outside of Yale, you must inform your faculty mentor. Your faculty mentor will need to work with their business office in order to process the application. Please notify your faculty mentor at least 10 days prior to the application due date as there may be additional forms required by Yale's Office of Sponsored Projects.
