Summer to Advance Research Training at Yale School of Medicine
START@Yale 2025
START@Yale is a research program for students accepted to the Yale School of Medicine (YSM) that occurs in the summer prior to matriculation to YSM. This program is appropriate for students regardless of prior research experience and is a wonderful opportunity to become familiar with the rich research environment at YSM. In the summer of 2025, START@Yale will be in-person and include orientation, lab experiences, research, journal clubs, didactic activities, and a final symposium. The overarching goal of START@Yale is to encourage interest in physician-scientist careers among entering medical students.

Student Mentors
General Information
Program period: June 9 through July 31, 2025
Mentors: Based on their preferences, students will be matched to mentors whose research interests span diverse areas of biomedical research. Recommended mentors have been selected who are clinically trained physician-scientists, have major grant funding, and are available during the summer to participate in program activities.
Applicants may also suggest additional members of the Yale faculty whom they have identified as potential mentors based on research interest. We will confirm that all mentors meet program criteria before matching them to students. Dr. Ment and Dr. Aronson will be pleased to provide advice and assistance in identifying additional mentors in your areas of interest.
International students must confirm F-1 or other legal status permitting them to enroll and receive a stipend. Travel and entry to the US in a visitor status is not valid for participation in the START program. International students should be in direct communication with Yale OISS about status and travel.
Stipend: The stipend for the eight-week period will be $4,704 total: $2,352/month x 2 months or $588.00 per week.

May 12: Notification of acceptance into START@Yale and mentor match
May 19: Deadline for accepted students to commit to participate in START@Yale 2025
June 6: Deadline for START participants to indicate "Commit to Enroll" on the Choose Your Medical School website & YSM Admissions Portal – by 5pm
June 7-8: Move in weekend
June 9: Orientation and START@Yale student matriculation
July 31: Closing Symposium
August 4: Matriculation date for the rest of the entering class

A major goal of the START@Yale program is to provide participants with the opportunity to undertake research during the summer before the first year of medical school.
We encourage START@Yale participants to perform research with physician-scientist mentors who are role models for successful career development that involved both research and clinical training. Examples of clinically trained physician-scientist faculty members are listed below. A link is provided for information about the research interests of each of these faculty members.
