Pathology

Thread Leader

Thread Description

Organization

Pathology covers the essential structures and functions of abnormal cells and tissues in the body. It explains the molecular pathways within and among cells and how they contribute to disease. The thread also describes how changes at the molecular level alter cell structure and physiology and can progress to disease. Pathology also guides students through interpreting histological images of abnormal cells and tissues. The ability to differentiate histologically normal from abnormal tissues is an essential skill in diagnosing and understanding disease.

Pedagogy

Pathology uses lectures and laboratory learning to deliver content to students. Laboratory learning is based on a custom-made web based interface (“CampLab”) which promotes active learning, and supports interaction both among students and between students and faculty. In addition, tissue specimens from pathologic conditions is reviewed.
