David A. Hafler, M.D., chair of neurology at the School of Medicine, has been named the inaugural Gilbert H. Glaser, M.D., Professor of Neurology. Hafler, a leader in the effort to better understand the molecular basis of multiple sclerosis, joined the faculty in September. An authority on the mechanisms of autoimmunity and inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system, he was previously director of molecular immunology in the neurology department of Harvard Medical School, where he was the Jack, Sadie, and David Breakstone Professor of Neurology (Neuro-science) and a neurologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Hafler also received the John J. Dystel Prize for Multiple Sclerosis Research from the American Academy of Neurology in January. The prize is given in recognition of his outstanding achievements in multiple sclerosis research. The award comes with a $15,000 prize.
