Helen L. Smits, M.D. ’67, was inducted into the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame in October. Smits, a retired physician-manager whose most recent work has been in Mozambique and other countries in sub-Saharan Africa, was honored for her work as an international health care leader and teacher. She currently serves as a senior consultant to the Doris Duke Foundation’s African Health Initiative. She is the former director of the John Dempsey Hospital at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, and is a former member of the board of directors of the Hartford Stage.
