Gerald I. Shulman, M.D., Ph.D., the George R. Cowgill Professor of Physiological Chemistry, professor of medicine and of cellular and molecular physiology and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in December. He is one of 531 AAAS members elevated to this rank last year for their efforts toward advancing science applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished. Shulman was honored for his contributions to the understanding of type 2 diabetes, notably the mechanisms of insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome, a cluster of risk factors for diabetes and heart disease.
