Biography

Mitsuaki Sawano, MD, Ph.D. joined Yale/YNHH Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE) in May 2022. Dr. Sawano obtained his medical degree from Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo, Japan. Following his Internal Medicine residency at Kawasaki Municipal Hospital, he served as a board-certified cardiologist and outcomes researcher at Keio University Hospital, Department of Cardiology. Dr. Sawano furthered his education during his Ph.D. program at Keio University and Harvard Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Program, where he received training in statistics and epidemiology.

Dr. Sawano's recent endeavors include serving as a writing member for various guidelines such as the Japanese Circulation Society (JCS) 2023 Guideline on the Primary Prevention of Coronary Artery Disease, 2022 JCS Guideline Focused Update on Diagnosis and Treatment in Patients with Stable Coronary Artery Disease, Japanese Association of Cardiovascular Intervention and Therapeutics (CVIT) nationwide percutaneous coronary intervention registry committee, Japan Circulation Society, Japan International Young Community, and the Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology (APSC).

Dr. Sawano's research interests primarily focus on identifying optimal methods to interpret and implement evidence generated from clinical trials and real-world evidence in the United States to Asian countries while considering differences in race, ethnicity, and healthcare systems. With his extensive background working with Japanese clinical and epidemiologic study members and databases, Dr. Sawano seeks to compare them to NCDR and other US databases to examine key issues associated with cardiovascular health inequity at CORE.
