Research Summary

Dr. Illuzzi's research focuses on examining and building upon the evidence surrounding obstetric intervention. Many protocols, procedures, and technologies have arisen within the realm of labor and birth that have not been subjected to rigorous study or the studies that have been done are small or inconsistent. By using formal methods of systematic review, meta-analysis, large cohort or cross sectional study designs, more clarity can be obtained.

In this manner, her research has included examining the evidence supporting the CDC protocol for prevention of intrapartum transmission of group B streptococcus to the newborn. From this systematic review, a prospective cohort study was designed to determine the adequate duration of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent vertical GBS transmission. Work in 2012 helped to identify the root causes of the rising cesarean delivery rate and prompted further attention to preventative measures nationally. In 2014, Dr. Illuzzi published results of a prospective cohort study of outcomes in birth centers across the U.S., and in 2015, she began to examine maternal and neonatal morbidity and costs across different maternity care models and sites with varying levels of obstetric intervention.
