YSM Curriculum Update

Public Safety Town Hall

The recent alerts from Yale Police Chief Anthony Campbell, including yesterday’s about gun shots outside Yale New Haven Hospital on York Street, have been very unsettling. As Friday’s email from Chief Campbell and Deputy Dean Dontes said, Yale School of Medicine is planning school-wide town halls on public safety. In addition to those (which you are very welcome to attend), we are planning a Town Hall just for MD and MD-PhD students, so that you can engage with the Yale Police Department and Yale Public Safety in a smaller forum. We know many of you not only study/perform rotations on campus at YNHH, but live nearby. We will be following up soon with details about the Town Hall.

In the meantime, we want to remind you of support resources, in case they are helpful at this time:

  • John Francis, MD, PhD, Associate Dean for Student Affairs john.francis@yale.edu
    Cell: 203-500-4176
Dean Francis is willing and available to meet with all MD and MD/PhD students for support regarding any of their concerns.
  • Yale Student Mental Health & Counseling
    yalehealth.yale.edu/directory/departments/mental-health-counseling

    203-432-0290
Appointments for an initial consultation in Mental Health & Counseling can be made by phone during business hours, Monday to Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. You will be offered an initial appointment to speak with a clinician within one week.

Safety Contacts:

  • Yale Police: 203-432-4400
  • Yale Security: 203-785-5555
  • Immediate danger: 911
LiveSafe app: Download the app that lets you request walking escorts, discreetly text Yale police in an emergency, and more.

Hiring a YSM Curriculum Summer Mapping Assistant

We are looking for students interested in medical education to help with curriculum mapping this summer. Mapping is a detailed process in which learning objectives from teaching sessions are “mapped” to the overall competencies of an educational program. Once a curriculum is mapped, teachers and learners can see the relationships of educational components across a curriculum. Successful mapping will allow us to more easily see opportunities for content development and integration.

After a quick introduction to the process by staff and faculty in the Office of Curriculum, we anticipate it will take a pair of students roughly 4 hours to map each course, though time demands will vary by course. We are looking for enough help to map the entire curriculum by July 1st. A basic knowledge of spreadsheet editing and an eye for detail are the only prerequisites. Students will be paid the student employment rate for their time.

Please email A Gould and Susan Larkin to let them know of your interest by May 30. We will preferentially hire students who can commit to mapping multiple courses.

Seeking iPro Student Director for Fall 2023 Course

We are seeking applicants for the Student Director role for the Introduction to the Profession (iPro) course. iPro is the first course the first-year medical students experience at YSM. This course has a positive impact on many students during their initial experience at YSM and we hope that you will consider being a part of it.

Please find the job description here.

If you are interested, please email Drs. Barry Wu and Oluwatosin Adyemo with a copy of your CV and one or two sentences stating why you are interested in the role by May 26, 2023.

Commencement, May 22nd, 2023

We look forward to celebrating the Yale School of Medicine MD Class of 2023 at their commencement ceremony on Monday, May 22 at 12:30 p.m., in Amistad Park. As we previously shared, the Class of 2023 has selected Anthony Fauci, MD, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health as the commencement speaker.

We anticipate that some individuals protesting against Dr. Fauci will be in the area before and perhaps during the ceremony. We therefore want to inform you about a few security measures we will follow to ensure the ceremony runs without disruption.

  1. Everyone must enter Amistad Park through one of two security entrances, located on Washington Street at Cedar Street. The entrances will open to guests at 10 a.m.
  2. Only people with Yale IDs—as well as family members of our MD graduates and YSM alumni, who will be given wristbands—can enter Amistad Park during the ceremony. No bags larger than 12”x12” will be allowed in Amistad Park. All bags will be subject to screening. There will not be a location to check bags. We recommend that you do not bring any bags larger than this size with you.
  3. U.S. Marshals will be next to the stage during commencement.

The Yale Police Department and New Haven Police Department will ensure that protestors adhere to the guidelines outlined in their permit and do not disrupt the ceremony. We are grateful to both departments for their help with our ceremony.

Again, we look forward to celebrating our MD Program graduates on May 22.
