We want to make you aware of some recent changes in the naming convention for the discipline based rotations within each twelve week integrated clerkship block. We heard your concerns about the July Precede dates and travel issues. As a result, the School-Wide Precede 3 (July 3rd) has been made VIRTUAL. We recognize that the July 4th weekend posed a challenge for those traveling. After discussion with student and educational leadership, we modified Precede 3 to be virtual. It is required and the material will not be redundant. With July 4th as a holiday, the clerkship specific – precedes will be in person and mandatory on July 5th.

We want to remind you that:

  • the deadline for submitting a request for a clerkship absence for a conference presentation during Block 3 is June 3rd. The policy for requests of this type requires 30 days notice prior to the start of the block.
  • as you are completing the requirements for the clerkship component rotations in Block 2, remember that if you have not successfully passed the component knowledge exam, you must self-identify to the Clerkship Component Director within 4 days to discuss opportunities for remediation.
  • as you are almost halfway through the clerkship blocks, you have learned to navigate identifying and completing required experiences outlined in your logbook. However, if you have difficulties completing required procedures and clinical encounters, please reach out to your teams or clerkship component directors to help guide you. They are all looking to help you succeed and complete the required experiences.

Reporting Concerns About Mistreatment, Harassment, or Bias

At the end of each component of your clerkship blocks, you will have the opportunity to complete an evaluation of your experience on the clerkship. Similar to the courses, we ask about experiences of mistreatment, harassment, or bias. These reports will not be visible to your clerkship directors prior to completing their evaluations of you. The reports are reviewed on a quarterly basis and are shared with the Office of Academic and Professional Development. Clerkship directors and departments are expected to document how they are responding to every incident reported by a student. In collaboration with Dean Robert Rohrbaugh, Dean Illuzzi follows up with the Chairs of the Departments to monitor progress in addressing issues of professionalism and conduct in the learning environment.

There is also a way to report a concern on a real-time basis through the OAPD website. Use this link for real-time reporting. This site also provides a more detailed description of how professionalism concerns are handled at YSM.

You may ALWAYS contact your clerkship/elective director, advisor, or medical education deans if you have a concern that you would like to discuss. We will respect your confidentiality and talk about ways to approach or address issues you may encounter.
