College Dinners in January 2024

Please join Dean Illuzzi and Dean Francis, along with your academic advisor/head of college, for our first-ever YSM college dinners in January! Each college has a designated date/time specific to that college. Joining Deans Illuzzi, Francis, and your advisor, will be our 1st year longitudinal coaches, our recently added college affiliates, and your newly appointed student representative. This is an evening of introductions, mingling and networking, and a casual dinner. All of our college members are beyond excited to meet and work with you – this is sure to be an opportunity to connect with individuals who can provide wonderful mentorship, access to research opportunities, and general career exploration!

College Dinners, starting at 5:30PM in Café Med/Harkness Ballroom (367 Cedar St., Harkness D) on the following dates:

Working with Medical Interpreters and Patients with Non-English Language Preference

All students learn about working with interpreters during clerkships, but in response to student feedback and the growing number of patients with non-English language preference, we have added formal curricular content on the topic. This year, MS2s had two Clinical Skills sessions on this topic prior to the clerkship year. While all students need to learn this important skill, some students have proficiency in languages other than English that can allow them to speak directly with non-English speaking patients. Language-concordant care can enhance trust in the patient relationship, improve health outcomes, and advance health equity. However, incomplete fluency can lead to medical error and negative health outcomes. Yale New Haven Health has a certification process to ensure competency of clinicians providing services to patients in languages other than English. We encourage interested students to apply for certification through the YNHH Bilingual Competency Program (BCP). After submitting a short form, students will receive information about completing an audio-recorded assessment that takes less than an hour to complete. Certification through BCP enables one to communicate directly with language-concordant patients. Importantly, the certification does not allow one to serve as a medical interpreter. Medical interpreters typically complete independent 40-hour certificate programs separate from the BCP. To apply for BCP certification or for more information, contact bcprogram@ynhh.org.

UWorld USMLE Step 2 CK Qbank with 360-Day Access for MS2 Students Entering Clerkships in January 2024

The YSM Alumni Fund is providing the funds for the school to provide all MS2 students the UWorld USMLE Step 2 CK Qbank with 360-Day Access. In November 2023, MS2 students received an email to opt in for a voucher that can be used to provide access to the Step 2 CK Qbank. The voucher can be redeemed at any point within one year of receiving it and once redeemed will provide 360 days of access to the Q-Bank. Features of the UWorld Qbank package can be found at medical.uworld.com/usmle/usmle-step-2-ck.
