Ferrante Receives R01 Grant for Geriatric Critical Care Research
Lauren Ferrante, MD, MHS, assistant professor of medicine (pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine), was awarded a Research Project Grant (R01) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the project Evaluating the Unmet Needs of Older Adults to Promote Functional Recovery After a Critical Illness (LANTERN).
Hoy Shen Selected as Rita Allen Foundation Scholar
The scholarship will enable Shen to focus on the “deorphanization” of hundreds of enzymes and transporters of unknown functions that are encoded in the human genome and are important to cellular and organismal physiology. Steele, Assaf to Study Brain Mechanisms in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Vaughn R. Steele, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry, and Michal Assaf, MD, director of research at the Mary W. Parker Autism Center and adjunct associate professor of psychiatry, are the principal investigators on a project funded by the National Institute of Mental Health that will study brain mechanisms in adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
New Funding to Support Kidney Cancer Research in Braun Lab
The laboratory of David A. Braun, MD, PhD, has received approximately $5.75M in federal awards to fund mechanisms of response and resistance to immune therapy in kidney cancer at Yale Cancer Center. Funding from the National Cancer Institute and the Department of Defense will support new projects in Dr. Braun’s lab to investigate the immune microenvironment of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) or kidney cancer.
Haeny Receives Early Career Investigator Award from MOBC
Angela M. Haeny, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and director of the Racial Equity & Addiction Lab, was the recipient of the 2023 Early Career Investigator Award from the Translational Mechanisms of Behavior Change (MOBC) Satellite Meeting at the Research Society on Alcohol (RSA).
Drs. Silvia Vilarinho, Andrew Wang Named Physician Scientist Training Program Leadership
New leadership in the Yale Internal Medicine Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP) was recently announced. Silvia Vilarinho, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine (digestive diseases) and of pathology; was appointed to director, with Andrew Wang, MD/PhD, assistant professor of medicine (rheumatology) being named associate director of the program.
YIGH-Affiliated Faculty Receive MacMillan Awards
Two faculty affiliated with the Yale Institute for Global Health (YIGH) recently received awards from the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies. Each spring, the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies offers awards through the Kempf Memorial Fund, which supports faculty in organizing on-campus conferences, workshops, and lectures on international topics in their fields of interest.

Silvia Vilarinho, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine (digestive diseases) and of pathology; was named the 2023 Leah Lowenstein Award recipient at the Yale School of Medicine (YSM) Commencement ceremony on Monday, May 22, 2023. Stephen Wang, MD, MPH, a PGY-3 resident in the Department of Internal Medicine’s Primary Care Residency Program was honored with the Betsy Winters House Staff Award, along with Justin Nguyen, MD, a chief resident in the Department of Urology.
