Clinical Care

Overview

Xuchen Zhang, MD, PhD, is a pathologist who specializes in diagnosing liver and gastrointestinal conditions, as well as in lung diseases. Dr. Zhang is a fourth-generation physician in his family. “My father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were doctors,” he says.

On a daily basis, Dr. Zhang examines tissue samples and biopsies from patients with suspected gastrointestinal and liver diseases, and renders a pathology diagnosis. “My diagnosis can help the clinician to choose the best treatment and management of the disease,” Dr. Zhang says. “That’s the part I most enjoy about my job.”

At Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Zhang is an associate professor of pathology. Dr. Zhang’s research interests include lung diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, liver tumors, and cancers related to the liver and digestive tract. “I actively collaborate with other investigators at Yale in the areas of lung, liver, and gastrointestinal pathology,” Dr. Zhang says. In addition to these diverse specialties and interest, Dr. Zhang also contributes to research on how to better classify the different types of colon cancer and liver cancer.
