Biography

Dr. Gwen Lopez-Cohen is a board certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with clinical expertise in anxiety, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorders. She earned her medical degree with honors in physiology and neuroscience at the New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Lopez-Cohen completed her adult psychiatry residency training at NYU School of Medicine and Bellevue Hospital. She completed a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the NYU School of Medicine and the NYU Child Study Center. Dr. Lopez-Cohen completed an advanced residency in Public Psychiatry at Yale University where she focused on studying young adults on the autism spectrum. She currently works as a consultant to a residential program for young adults on the autism spectrum and as a consultant to the juvenille detention system. Dr. Lopez-Cohen has worked on clinical trials with the RUPP group studying guanfacine ER in children with pervasive developmental disorders. Prior to her career in medicine Dr. Lopez-Cohen was an early childhood educator trained at the Bank Street College of Education. Dr. Lopez-Cohen holds a bachelor's degree in South Asian Studies from Barnard College.

Overview

Gwendolyn Lopez-Cohen, MD, is a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist with clinical expertise in anxiety, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorders.

“I enjoy working with families and partnering with parents to help their children experience success,” Dr. Lopez-Cohen says. “Child development is a fluid process, and it is very rewarding to watch children change and grow into young adults.”

She is the medical director for outpatient mental health at the Children's Center of Hamden. Dr. Lopez-Cohen has worked on clinical trials studying Guanfacine ER (a cognition-enhancing medication) in children with pervasive developmental disorders.

Prior to her career in medicine, Dr. Lopez-Cohen was an early childhood educator. “Child psychiatry is the ideal field to apply my medical training in conjunction with my training as an educator,” she says.

She is a member of the Connecticut Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
