Biography

Dr. Aidin Eslam Pour, MD, MS, FAAOS is a highly trained and qualified orthopaedic surgeon and clinician scientist who specializes in treating patients with hip and knee problems. As the Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at West Haven Veterans Affair Hospital, he is dedicated to providing comprehensive and compassionate care to his patients including Veterans.

Dr. Eslam Pour is experienced in using joint preservation techniques, as well as performing total hip and knee arthroplasty to restore mobility and alleviate pain. Additionally, he is skilled in addressing complications related to prosthetics, such as dislocation, infection, and pain.

One of Dr. Eslam Pour's primary areas of research is digital human performance analysis, where he investigates the relationship between the hip and spine, as well as computer simulations of human motion. He also conducts clinical research on surgical arthritis and joint preservation. Dr. Eslam Pour has been recognized for his contributions to the field, having been awarded the Mentored Clinician Scientist Award (K08) from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) and grants from the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF).

Dr. Eslam Pour's expertise is not limited to patient care and research. He is also an esteemed member of the medical community, serving as an Elite reviewer for several reputable orthopaedic journals, including the Journal of Arthroplasty, International Orthopaedics, Arthroplasty Today, and Bone and Joint Journal. He also serves as an ad hoc reviewer for grant programs, further demonstrating his commitment to advancing the field of orthopaedics.

Research

Overview

Dr. Aidin Eslam Pour is a highly regarded clinician-scientist with a research focus on investigating the hip-spine relationship, computer simulation of human motion, and clinical research related to surgical arthritis and joint preservation. His dedication to advancing the field of orthopaedics is evident in his numerous awards and accolades, including receiving a mentored clinical scientist grant from the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) in 2019, as well as from the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) in 2022 and 2023.

Dr. Eslam Pour's research into the hip-spine relationship builds upon the work of his mentors, Professor Lazennec and Professor Lawrence Dorr, who demonstrated the role of hip-spine relation in dislocation of total hip arthroplasty and prosthetic or bone-on-bone impingement. Using computer simulations, Dr. Eslam Pour has studied how the pelvis tilts sagittally, coronally, and axially during the motions of daily living, as well as how the femur moves in different patients. He has also investigated how total hip arthroplasty implant orientation and design affect the risk of impingement and dislocation, using verified computer simulation models and available technologies from major orthopaedic companies. Additionally, Dr. Eslam Pour has invented smart trial implants that further enhance his research capabilities.

Dr. Aidin Eslam Pour's research portfolio extends beyond the hip-spine relationship and computer simulation of human motion. He has also conducted extensive research on limb length discrepancy and is interested in hip muscle function using 3D imaging and computer simulation. Using EOS imaging, Dr. Eslam Pour has studied the patient’s perception of limb length discrepancy and how it is affected by each patient’s anatomy.

Dr. Eslam Pour is committed to advancing personalized medicine approaches in orthopaedics, recognizing that each patient has unique needs and anatomical considerations. By tailoring treatment plans to individual patients, he believes that he can improve the outcome of surgery and treatment. He is also investigating the femoroacetabular impingement syndrome, using computer simulations to study the motions of athletes and understand how each athlete's movements affect impingement, and how to perform preoperative planning for each athlete based on their unique anatomy and motions.

Collaboration is a crucial aspect of Dr. Eslam Pour's research efforts, and he works closely with world-renowned orthopaedic surgeons from the United States and Europe, as well as with his colleagues at Yale. Through these collaborations, he is able to share knowledge and expertise, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the field of orthopaedic surgery.
