Jorge E. Galán, D.V.M., Ph.D., the Lucille P. Markey Professor of Microbial Pathogenesis, professor of cell biology and chair of the Section of Microbial Pathogenesis, received in February the 2011 Robert Koch Award, one of the most prestigious honors in the field of microbiology. Galán was honored for his work in describing how such foodborne pathogens as Salmonella andCampylobacter cause so much damage. The award, given by the Robert Koch Foundation in Berlin, Germany, carries a prize of 100,000 euros and honors the work of the German physician who sought a cure for tuberculosis in the 1880s.
