Laura Baum, MD, MPH, has been appointed an Assistant Professor of Medicine (Medical Oncology) at Yale Cancer Center and will care for patients as part of the Smilow Cancer Hospital Center for Gastrointestinal Cancers and the Smilow Palliative Care Program.

“We’re very excited to welcome Dr. Baum as part of our Medical Oncology and Palliative care clinical care teams,” said Roy S. Herbst, MD, PhD, Ensign Professor of Medicine (Medical Oncology), Professor of Pharmacology and Chief of Medical Oncology at Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital. “She is highly regarded for outstanding patient care and clinical expertise in GI Oncology, and we look forward to her continuing her important research efforts here at Yale.”

Baum’s research will focus on gastrointestinal cancers, palliative care, and health services. Past studies have included research on chemotherapy use near the end-of-life, unused opioids and benzodiazepines remaining after death, and psychosocial outcomes in young adults and caregivers with new cancer diagnoses.

“Dr. Baum’s combined focus on the care of patients with gastrointestinal cancers and palliative care needs will be an asset to the Center for Gastrointestinal Cancers at Smilow Cancer Hospital,” said Pamela Kunz, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine (Medical Oncology), Director of the Center for Gastrointestinal Cancers and Chief of GI Medical Oncology. “We look forward to Dr. Baum’s arrival in August.”

Baum received her medical degree from University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She completed a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at The Mount Sinai Hospital, and her residency at New York University Langone Medical Center where she served as a Chief Resident. Baum is currently completing her Master’s in Public Health and a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at Vanderbilt University.

Baum starts in her new position in August.
