Biography

Sean Peden, MD is a Board Certified Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Yale School of Medicine, specializing in foot and ankle surgery. Dr. Peden is an expert in the surgical and nonsurgical treatment of all foot-related conditions.

Born and raised in lower Fairfield County, Dr Peden played a variety of sports including football, baseball, and ice hockey throughout his youth and high school years. He attended Brown University, graduating in 2004. As an undergraduate he worked with the athletic department at Brown on sports medicine and rehabilitation.

Dr. Peden then spent four years at the Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis. During medical school he developed a love of orthopaedic education at one of the top programs in the country. He worked with the sports medicine physicians for the St. Louis Cardinals and participated in molecular bone-health orthopaedic research in Washington University's world-renowned research department.

Dr. Peden then went on to complete his orthopaedic surgery residency at George Washington University in Washington. A five year program, it provided teaching and experience in general orthopaedics, including pediatric and hip surgery, as well as an in-depth experience with several highly trained and experienced foot and ankle surgeons. Foot and ankle surgery was appealing to Dr. Peden because of the unique anatomy and opportunity for a wide range of surgeries, including reconstruction, deformity correction, trauma, and sports medicine.

He then went on to a one-year fellowship in foot and ankle orthopaedic surgery at the Michigan International Foot and Ankle Center under the guidance of Arthur Manoli II, MD. During this year, Dr. Peden performed further research, including original papers that defined foot and ankle anatomy in new and unique ways.

After fellowship, Dr Peden worked for a private practice in Greenwich, Conn. for five years. During this time he performed extensive foot and ankle orthopaedic as well as general orthopaedic surgery, primarily at the Greenwich Hospital.

In 2019, Dr. Peden joined Yale University where based out of the department's Stamford office, he continues to serve patients in lower Fairfield County and Westchester. Dr. Peden performs surgeries at Greenwich Hospital and its outpatient surgical facilities.

Clinical Care

Overview

As an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in foot and ankle conditions, Sean Peden, MD, says he finds it gratifying to help patients heal and return to their normal activities—often without surgery.

“There are a lot of debilitating, complex conditions that can affect the foot and ankle,” Dr. Peden says. “If your foot hurts, you still have to walk on it. And if you can’t walk properly, there are many things you can’t do. I love to restore someone’s ability to go for a run or hike or even just wear a normal shoe.”

Dr. Peden says he never wants to tell patients they can’t return to the activities they love. “My goal is to maintain their level of function, or in some cases, even improve their function and quality of life,” he says. “I make sure they understand their diagnosis, their treatment plan, and other options if the treatment doesn’t work.”

Dr. Peden also enjoys the variety of medical conditions he treats. “I liken my job to a general orthopaedic surgeon, but one who specializes in one body part,” he says. “I take care of kids and adults and treat everything from arthritis to complex trauma to overuse injuries such as tendonitis and stress fractures to bunion and hammer toe surgery.”

Plantar fasciitis, a painful condition that affects the band of tissue that connects the heel to the toe, is a common one Dr. Peden addresses. “There is a lot misinformation about it, so it’s nice to educate patients on the facts and science behind it,” he says. “The majority of patients with plantar fasciitis require modifications to their lifestyle and footwear. Often, they have tight muscles that need to be addressed with stretching.”

Dr. Peden is also skilled at treating fractures. “It is satisfying to take someone who has experienced significant trauma and fix his or her problem,” he says. “Most fractures heal fine. People have been breaking their bones for millions of years. And usually, if there is acceptable alignment and the surrounding joints aren’t affected, fractures can be treated nonsurgically.”
