Biography

Emre Seli, MD, is a Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at Yale School of Medicine, and the Medical Director of Yale Fertility Center. He also serves as the Director of Yale IVF Program, and Director of Yale Egg Donation and Gestational Surrogacy Program. Dr. Seli received his medical degree from the University of Istanbul and completed his Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yale University. His postdoctoral training included a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility as well as a research fellowship in molecular biology, both at Yale University.

As a physician-scientist, his primary focus is to understand and treat infertility. His laboratory characterized the mechanisms regulating translational activation of gene expression in the oocyte. Dr. Seli and his colleagues also made seminal contributions to our understanding of oocyte and embryo competence in IVF and the potential role of non-invasive diagnostic technologies in this context. Dr. Seli is the recipient of many National Institutes of Health (NIH) and pharmaceutical industry-sponsored research grants. He has trained more than 100 pre- and post-doctoral fellows, published more than 150 scientific articles, and received numerous research awards, including the Ira and Ester Rosenwaks New Investigator Award from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), and the President’s Achievement Award from the Society for Reproductive Investigation (SRI). Dr. Seli’s current research focuses on determinants of oocyte and embryo health and mechanisms of ovarian aging.

An avid educator, Dr. Seli delivered more than 150 invited lectures nationally and internationally, and he is the recipient of the “Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) Excellence in Teaching Award” based on evaluations of his lectures by Yale Medical Students. In addition, Dr. Seli edited four books (Non-invasive Management of Gynecologic Disorders, Infertility, Fertility Preservation, and Human Gametes and Preimplantation Embryos: Assessment and Diagnosis), and most recently co-authored the 9th edition of the most acclaimed book in the field, “Speroff’s Clinical Gynecologic Endocrinology and Infertility“.

Dr. Seli’s clinical expertise is in the treatment of complex cases of infertility. His patients receive individualized care, cutting-edge treatment modalities and achieve very high pregnancy rates. As a result of his clinical achievements, Dr. Seli has been selected among “Best Doctors in America” every year since 2015.

Dr. Seli is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and consults in our New Haven and Westport offices.

Clinical Care

Overview

Emre Seli, MD, specializes in treating complex infertility cases, including women and men who need egg donation or gestational surrogacy. Dr. Seli’s patients experience very high pregnancy rates, with 78 percent achieving live birth through egg donation in 2015. He also addresses the medical, psychological and legal needs of LGBTQ patients attempting parenthood.

Dr. Emre says the most exciting part of his work is combining biomedical research with advances in the field of infertility, including personalized medicine. “The first baby born through IVF (in vitro fertilization) is not even 40 years old,” he notes. “Since then, we have learned how to freeze embryos, eggs and perform diagnostic procedures in the embryo. Every day, a new experimental procedure is being offered to women and men with infertility.”

The Yale Medicine Fertility Center is at the forefront of these discoveries and, Dr. Seli says, “We are constantly collaborating with other leading researchers in the field. As a result, we provide our patients a critical assessment of all options to achieve the best possible outcome."

Dr. Seli is a professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Yale School of Medicine. In his laboratory, Dr. Seli researches determinants of egg and embryo health, and mechanisms of ovarian aging. He and his colleagues have made significant contributions within the field of in vitro fertilization (IVF), especially in understanding which embryos might result in a successful pregnancy and birth.

“We continually seek new and better ways of helping our patients,” Dr. Seli says. “One thing is for sure, three years from now, we’ll be doing things differently than we are doing now.”
