Yale Cardiovascular Medicine Grand Rounds: "Coronary Artery Calcification OR Genetics for Risk Stratification in the Primary Prevention of Coronary Artery Disease"

Overview

With renewed emphasis on CT scans for assessing coronary artery calcification (CAC) in the new prevention guidelines, there is a critical need to understand the pivotal role of CAC score in decision making.

The rise of genetic risk scores in non-monogenic forms of CAD makes it important to have a healthy debate about role of polygenic risk scores and CAC in risk stratification for primary prevention of CAD.

About the Speakers

Maen Abou Ziki, MD, is a second year fellow in cardiovascular medicine. He graduated with honors in research from the Qatar campus of the Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University prior to starting his internal medicine residency at Yale University in June 2014.

Since medical school, Abou Ziki has been involved in genetic medicine research with projects encompassing genomics and gene therapy. His current projects focus on genetic modifiers for atherosclerotic coronary artery disease, and arrhythmogenic conditions such as long QT syndrome and heart block. He has also collaborated with several research groups on studies of thromboembolic disease and outcomes research in heart failure patients.

Abou Ziki's cardiovascular genetics research will contribute towards better screening and cardiovascular risk stratification, in addition to advancing our molecular understanding of disease pathways.

Ehimen Aneni, MD, MPH, is a second year fellow in cardiovascular medicine. He earned an MPH degree from Boston University in 2012 and graduated from University of Ibadan in 2004. Aneni completed his residency training at Mount Sinai Medical Center of Florida.

His research has focused on preventive cardiology broadly with specific interests in cardiometabolic health, and the intersection of sleep, sleep disorders and, cardiovascular health.

His work has been presented at several national cardiovascular conferences such as the ACC and AHA and is published in several prominent medical journals including JACC and Circulation Quality of Care and Outcomes.
