Clinical Care

Overview

Sona Jasani, MD, is an obstetrician-gynecologist who specializes in caring for women in labor and delivering babies.

As a laborist with Obstetric Specialties & Midwifery, Dr. Jasani says she enjoys “the most intimate part” of Ob/Gyn care.

“There is just something about that acute situation and really being there to support a woman and watch a life enter this world that is incredible,” she says. “There’s nothing else like it, and It rejuvenates me.”

Dr. Jasani says she was drawn to her field at a young age. “My mother had a lot of issues with infertility and she tried for 15 years to have children before my sister and I were born,” she says. “Obstetric matters were always a natural part of our conversations, and I became passionate about reproductive health in general.”

Dr. Jasani considered focusing on research before realizing she craved more human interaction. When she meets women in the delivery room, she believes the patient always comes first.

“Whether this is someone who has given birth five times or this is their first experience and they don’t know what to expect, I am there to tell them, ‘This is normal. This is OK.’ And if there is a problem, we talk about how we will solve it,” she says. “I like to involve the family members, the doulas, and any support staff and make everything seamless.”

Dr. Jasani’s research interests include informatics, which is the science of how to use data and knowledge to improve health care, and transdisciplinary thinking, which entails merging health care and outside disciplines, for example, using art to enhance clinical observations in medical education.
