Research Summary

Tuberculosis mortality remains high globally. In South Africa, fueled by a high prevalence of HIV, tuberculosis is the leading cause of death. I have been involved in research and clinical care for people co-infected with HIV and tuberculosis, especially drug-resistant tuberculosis, in South Africa for over a decade. My research focuses on improving outcomes in HIV and tuberculosis co-infection as well as better understanding of its epidemiology. To accomplish this I have established a research site at Doris Goodwin Hospital, a large multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) referral center in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa as well as set up collaborations with scientists locally and internationally. These efforts have resulted in a K01 career development award from the NIH/Fogarty International Center.
