Javeed Sukhera, MD, PhD

Dr. Sukhera is an internationally recognized health professions education scholar, generating and mobilizing knowledge that has demonstrably impacted policy and practice regarding mitigating bias for health professionals. He completed his PhD in 2018 and he is currently Chair/Chief of Psychiatry at the Institute of Living and Hartford Hospital which is home to the Olin Neuropsychiatry Research Center. He is also an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale University. He is on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Canadian Medical Association Journal and Deputy Editor of Perspectives on Medical Education.

He was formerly a Clinician-Researcher and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry with a cross-appointment to Paediatrics. He is also a Scientist at Schulich’s Centre for Education Research and Innovation and an Associate Scientist at Lawson Health Institute/Children’s Health Research Institute.

Scholarly Impact: Dr. Sukhera’s work focuses on understanding how health professionals perceive their implicit biases and how interventions aimed at addressing those biases unfold and influence change. He also explores how structural biases influence healthcare delivery while engaging patients, caregivers, and students in participatory approaches to the co-design of knowledge mobilization. Since 2012, he has secured over $2 million in grants and published his work in high impact journals and won numerous awards.

Impact Beyond the University: Over the past several years, Dr. Sukhera has been consistently invited to consult, speak, and train others on equity, diversity, and. For example, he has provided expert consultation and training to organizations such as the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and the Mental Health Commission of Canada. He has also translated his work into community advocacy as the Chair of London Ontario’s Police Services Board where he has led policy development and strategy implementation on anti-racism initiatives.[i] He was recognized for his community leadership as one of London’s top 20 under 40 in 2019.

Impact as a Mentor and Educator: Dr. Sukhera’s research and experience includes support for mentorship and training. He was the recipient of Schulich’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Education in 2018 and is consistently ranked as an outstanding teacher across the continuum of health professions education. He has also translated knowledge from his research into educational offerings for health professionals while supporting and mentoring students and junior researchers.
