Biography

Edward H. Shortliffe, MD, PhD, MACP, FACMI Professor, Biomedical Informatics Departments, Columbia University (New York) and Arizona State University (Phoenix). Edward(Ted) Shortliffe is Adjunct Professor and former chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University. He also holds an adjunct faculty position in Biomedical Informatics at Arizona State University and has previously held academic appointments at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, the University of Arizona(where he was medical school dean), and Stanford University. He also served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Medical Informatics Association and is now a Senior Executive Consultant to IBM Watson Health.Ted has been a leading researcher and educator in the field of biomedical informatics for over 40 years and is often credited with helping to define the field as a scholarly discipline. Both a Stanford-trained computer scientist and an internal medicine physician, he is an elected member of the US National Academy of Medicine, a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics,and a fellow of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence.Currently Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Biomedical Informatics and a well-known textbook on Biomedical Informatics, Dr. Shortliffe has authored over 350 articles and books in the fields of biomedical computing and artificial intelligence. Dr. Shortliffe is well known for his early work on medical expert systems, including the rule-based program known as MYCIN. An innovator in medical artificial intelligence since the 1970s, he has a unique perspective on medical AI, its past evolution, and its future role.
