Yale Ranked Among the Top Medical Schools for Research

July 24, 2024

Yale School of Medicine (YSM) is in the top tier of medical schools in the United States for research, according to new rankings from U.S. News & World Report.

The magazine’s 2024 “Best Medical Schools” ratings were released on July 23. This year, for the first time, U.S. News presented its rankings in evaluative tiers instead of numerical rankings. U.S. News divided schools into four tiers, with Tier 1 medical schools being the highest performing.

Yale is in Tier 1 for “Best Medical Schools: Research,” reflecting its strong commitment to pursuing groundbreaking investigations and advances in medicine, recruiting and supporting top researchers, and offering infrastructure that allows them to thrive.

In creating the rankings, U.S. News looked at such factors as federal research grants and contracts, total federal research activity per faculty member, National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grants at the medical school and its affiliated hospitals, and average NIH research grants per faculty. Other factors that were considered include median MCAT scores, median undergraduate GPAs, acceptance rate, and faculty/student ratio.

YSM is ranked fourth in the nation for total NIH funding in the most recently released rankings by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. In the federal fiscal year 2023, which ended September 30, 2023, YSM researchers received a total of $571,450,883 in NIH awards.
