The Yale Global Mental Health Program announces its 2013-2014 speaker series, symposia, and related departmental events.

This year's monthly speaker series will kick off with a screening of the movie "Psychiatry Unchained" on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at 5:45 pm in the large conference room of 300 George Street, Suite 901. Following the movie, a panel discussion will feature Yale Psychiatry faculty members Dr. Robert Rohrbaugh and Dr. Selby Jacobs.

Beginning in October, on the first Thursday of each month, the program will host a guest speaker. Speakers in this series will be invited from throughout the national and international global mental health community by residents, and will reflect the interests of current trainees. Guests will be announced on the program's web calendar as they are confirmed.

In addition to the Thursday speakers, the Yale Global Mental Health Program will host Dr. Vikram Patel, professor of international mental health at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, for a Psychiatry Grand Rounds lecture in March 2014. Patel is widely credited with launching the global mental health movement by editing two influential Lancet series (2007 and 2011) on the topic.

New this year, the program is offering an intensive one-day symposium in the fall and in the spring for the Yale community to get basic information about global mental health and to develop applicable skills. The first biannual Global Mental Health Program Symposium will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2013 from 10 am – 3 pm in room N203 in The Anlyan Center. Basic training in global mental health will be followed by an interactive lunch panel discussion, a skill-building exercise in the afternoon, and then trainees will present their work.

The Yale Global Mental Health Program aims to increase awareness of global mental health issues and social disparities while developing tools to address associated challenges both at home and abroad. In addition to bringing leaders in the field of global mental health to Yale, the Program provides education opportunities and electives for the Yale community and mentorship and facilitated international experiences for residents.

Individuals interested in learning more about the Yale Global Mental Health Program, or receiving updates about any of the above events, are invited to join the program's listserv.
