August 18, 2016

Beth A. Jones, PhD, MPH, Research Scientist in and Lecturer in Epidemiology (Chronic Diseases) in the Yale School of Public Health, Assistant Director for Diversity and Health Equity for Yale Cancer Center, and Director of the Smilow Cancer Screening & Prevention Program, recently received approval for a P30 CURE Supplement to support the Yale Cancer Center CURE Support Grant. The purpose of the grant is to advance the diversification of the cancer research pipeline by providing young people from groups that are underrepresented in cancer research, with hands–on experience, mentoring, and the opportunity to collaborate with research teams that are part of an NCI designated Cancer Center, while advancing the science and improving cancer related outcomes for the population and patients served by Yale Cancer Center.

The Continuing Umbrella of Research Experience (CURE) supplement is an innovative program that will provide invaluable support in helping to grow new and existing relationships between the Greater New Haven community and Yale Cancer Center. The goal being to meet the highest level of research excellence in reducing the burden of cancer morbidity and mortality in the racially/ethnically and socioeconomically diverse environment that is the city of New Haven.

“Working closely with Yale University’s Pathways to Science and the Yale Center for Analytic Sciences (YCAS) we will expand our ongoing disparities efforts and work to inspire and develop the next generation of cancer researchers and clinicians,” said Dr. Jones.

Dr. Jones has a national reputation as a cancer disparities researcher and has led a number of cancer epidemiology studies drawing on the diversity within the Connecticut population and New Haven, in particular. The proposal was submitted with support from Bob Garofalo, PhD, Associate Director of Research Affairs, and Christina Dreyfus in the Office of Research Affairs at Yale Cancer Center.
