Six times during this academic year, Grand Rounds presentations will follow the format of the Schwartz Center Rounds, first developed together with Smilow Cancer Hospital's Director Thomas Lynch, when he was still at the Massachussetts General Hospital. In contrast to traditional medical rounds, the focus of Schwartz Rounds is on the human dimension of medicine, and in particular on the challenges and satisfactions in providing compassionate clinical care. Caregivers have an opportunity to share their experiences, thoughts and feelings on thought-provoking topics drawn from actual patient cases. The premise is that caregivers are better able to make personal connections with patients and colleagues when they have greater insight into their own responses and feelings. A hallmark of the program is interdisciplinary dialogue.

The first Schwartz Rounds of the academic year took place on September 25 and was titled: “An Art more akin to Wrestling than to Dancing: Challenges in the decade-plus treatment of a family and boy with multiple disabilities” and was presented byRobert King, M.D., Medical Director, Tourette’s/OCD Clinic, Linda Zunda, Director, Elizabeth Ives School for Special Children and Mark Gesner, Family Support Services.

The second Schwartz Rounds will take place on October 30 and the title will be announced at a future date.
