Urogynecology Global Health Initiative (UGHI) Dominican Republic Nov 16-24, 2019

Dr Viji Kurup and Dr Nousheh Saidi were part of the anesthesia team who participated in an educational and service based collaboration between Yale New Haven Hospital Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences and the Hospital Docente Universitario Maternidad Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. They took care of patients with pelvic floor dysfunction and benign gynecologic conditions in women, encompassing issues such as urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, fibroids, and abnormal uterine bleeding. This is the third year of this successful initiative.

UGHI activities included:

 Educational workshops and modules with local residents and attendings. An airway workshop was conducted for local anesthesia faculty and residents

 Evaluations, diagnosis and treatment of women of lower socio-economic status in urban and rural settings

 Surgeries for appropriate candidates including removal of uterus, repair of prolapse, and treatment of stress urinary incontinence
