Support For Iran

October 19, 2022
by Gary Désir and Vandana Khungar

Attacks on protestors by the Islamic Republic’s security forces have been occurring across Iran following the death of Mahsa Jina Amini in September, including attacks on students and professors at Sharif University.

Academic hospitals in Iran have seen the sanctity of their workplace violated, including patients being arrested while seeking help, ambulances commandeered to arrest protestors, and doctors threatened for caring for the wounded.

The Department of Medicine and the Office of DEI in Medicine support our clinicians, educators, researchers, and staff affected by these tragic events. You may contact Vandana or me via phone or email at any time. Additionally, the university offers the following resources.

Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

  • Darin A. Latimore, MD, Deputy Dean for Diversity & Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer
  • Cindy Crusto, PhD, Associate Dean for Gender Equality and Director of the Office for Women in Medicine

Chaplain's Office

Chaplains meet one-on-one with anyone who would like to talk. Appointments can be made on their ‘Chat with a Chaplain Form’, by reaching out to one of the chaplains directly through email found on their staff bios, or by calling their office at 203-432-1128.

Our thoughts and support are with the Iranian community.

Sincerely,

Gary V. Désir, MD
