Steinfeld selected to be fellow in YSM's Medical Education Fellowship

July 21, 2017

Matthew Steinfeld, PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, has been selected to be a fellow in the Yale School of Medicine’s 2017-18 Medical Education Fellowship at the Teaching and Learning Center.

The fellowship works to develop the skills of clinician educators to provide educational and teaching leadership throughout the medical school. Participants read educational literature, discuss principles of learning, and design an educational project.

The fellowship will run from September 2017 through May 2018 and consist of 18 two-hour sessions.

Steinfeld, who is Associate Director of Clinical Training in the Substance Abuse Treatment Unit at the Connecticut Mental Health Center, was nominated by psychiatry department leadership for the program. All full-time faculty across the medical school holding a rank of assistant professor or higher are eligible to participate. Up to 14 fellows are accepted each academic year.

Steinfeld’s project will seek to bring senior psychoanalytic psychotherapists from across the country to Yale for a conference, specifically designed to offer to trainees an opportunity to engage with core psychoanalytic concepts through the wisdom of seasoned practitioners; pedagogical implications will be developed in the service of several educational endeavors, including a poster presentation during Medical Education Day at Yale next spring.

Steinfeld received his doctorate in clinical psychology from The New School for Social Research, and completed pre- and postdoctoral fellowships in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale. He has been a Fellow of the American Psychoanalytic Association and a Psychoanalytic Fellow at Columbia University’s Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. Last year he was elected to the board of Psychoanalysts for Social Responsibility (Section IX) in the American Psychological Associations’s Division of Psychoanalysis (Division 39).
