A Day in the Life of a Med Student

Where did you grow up and where were you living immediately prior to medical school?

I grew up in a Carolina, Puerto Rico, known as “Land of Giants.” Prior to medical school, I was living in Baltimore, Maryland.

Why did you choose Yale School of Medicine?

I chose the Yale MD-PhD program because I felt it was the best place to do an MD-PhD. The Yale System at the medical school, in addition to an outstanding neuroscience department, made me choose Yale. People here are amazing and want to see you succeed.

Can you briefly describe your schedule on a typical weekday?

Right now, as a second-year medical student in clerkships (psychiatry/primary care rotation), I am in the hospital from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. I see patients and do notes with supervision and feedback from attendings and residents. After the hospital, I review material and do some Anki. Since I am an MD-PhD student, I am also studying/reviewing for USMLE STEP 1, before our dedicated study time in the summer (in a "relax" way, exam is July/August). I still have time to go to the gym, eat, sleep, etc.

What neighborhood do you live in?

I live close to East Rock, but spend most of the time during the week Downtown.

What is your favorite thing to do in/near New Haven?

New Haven has amazing restaurants of all kinds. I like to try different ones as much as possible!

Do you have any final thoughts or advice for prospective students?

My advice is to pick the school that provides what you are looking for and what you need to achieve your goals.
