May 02, 2024

Daniella Meeker, PhD, is one of three researchers who were elected to the governing council of Cosmos, Epic's platform for electronic health records (EHR), on April 30. Meeker is currently Associate Professor of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science at Yale School of Medicine, and Chief Research Information Officer at Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Health System.

Cosmos is a database and software platform that integrates inpatient and outpatient electronic health records on the Epic system into a single, unified archive. The platform currently serves 246 million patients and 352,000 physicians across 32,884 clinics. The Cosmos governing council, comprising 15 researchers and clinicians, are elected by their peers to represent this community and oversee the platform's use.

"Dr. Meeker brings to the Cosmos community expertise and experience as the technical leader of several large clinical data network consortia," said Lucila Ohno-Machado, MD, PhD, MBA, deputy dean and chair for biomedical informatics. "Under her guidance, Yale School of Medicine’s infrastructure for informatics is being updated to reflect the impact of AI and precision medicine, and Yale’s participation in multi-centered clinical research will be significantly expanded as a result. She will bring innovation to the Cosmos community and scalable processes for clinical research informatics to the Yale community."

Cosmos offers researchers vast and diverse data that includes patient-generated health data and social determinants of health. The system also "facilitates an extended network of peers to collaborate with for rare diseases or medical mysteries," according to Epic's website.

Epic launched Cosmos in 2019.
