Yale Pediatrics is pleased to announce that John Giuliano, Jr., MD, FAAP, FCCM, has been appointed as medical director of the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, effective November 7, 2022.

Dr. Giuliano joined Yale’s PICU in 2008 and went on to serve as pediatric critical care’s associate fellowship program director in 2009, and as program director in 2014. Thanks to his leadership, the fellowship attracts the brightest in the country, with close to one hundred applicants just this year. Many of our graduating fellows are awarded National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants to pursue an academic career. In addition, Dr. Giuliano has served as the medical director for the pediatric transport program since 2008. He has been instrumental in growing the program and providing critical care to patients throughout the region. More recently, his leadership has been critical for Yale New Haven Children’s response to the unprecedented surge in pediatric respiratory illnesses this season, working closely with our pediatric emergency and pediatric hospitalist leadership teams to ensure safe and effective care for these patients.

Please also join us in thanking Josep Panisello, MD, FAAP, for his work as medical director of the PICU for the last ten years. Dr. Panisello will be stepping down from this role to focus on patient care. In addition to his operational leadership role in the PICU, Dr. Panisello served as the interim section chief from 2015 to 2022. Furthermore, Dr. Panisello was instrumental in creating the section of pediatric hospital medicine, which became an independent section in 2018. Thanks to Dr. Panisello’s leadership, Yale’s section of pediatric critical care is now one of the most academically successful in the country, with half the faculty supported by the NIH. Dr. Panisello was also instrumental in the PICU’s response to COVID-19. We are tremendously grateful for his contributions to Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Giuliano on his new appointment!
