Inaugural Scientific and Clinical Symposium on Pneumonia

November 21, 2016

The Inaugural Scientific and Clinical Symposium on Pneumonia will take place on December 9 at The Anlyan Center.

The World Health Organization estimates that lower respiratory tract infection is the most common infectious cause of death in the world with almost 3.5 million deaths yearly. In addition, community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is responsible for an estimated 10 million deaths annually worldwide. Within the United States alone, pneumococcus is responsible for more than half a million CAP cases each year. Despite advances in the understanding of contributing causes and prevention, hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and ventilator- associated pneumonia (VAP) continue to be frequent complications of hospital care.

HAP and VAP represent up to 22 percent of all hospital-acquired infections. Statistics point to the need for continued action to accelerate the reduction of morbidity and mortality associated with these lung infections. Furthermore, the increasing incidence of antibiotic resistance stresses the importance of increasing our knowledge of mechanisms that have the potential to influence the outcome of pneumonia.

Hosted by the Department of Internal Medicine, Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine and the Center for Pulmonary Infection Research and Treatment, this interactive, discussion-based symposium will provide information on currently accepted guidelines as well as the use of newly available tools for the diagnosis and treatment of pneumonia. Research abstract presentations will take place in the afternoon. For more information and to register, click here.
