Faculty, residents, and staff honored at Department of Psychiatry commencement

At its annual Resident and Fellow Commencement Ceremony, the Yale School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry announced the recipients of national and departmental awards. The celebration, held the evening of June 10th at Davenport Residential College and with more than 200 in attendance, marked the graduation of 21 residents and 22 fellows.

Faculty Awards

Stephen Fleck Award

2011 Recipient: Thomas McMahon, PhD
This award is given to a faculty member who follows in Dr. Fleck's footsteps as a model humanitarian and conscientious clinician—who by his/her behavior as a doctor and teacher exemplifies the highest standards of a clinician and educator.

Chairman’s Award

2011 Recipient: David Ross, MD
The Chairman's Award is given at graduation to a junior, full-time faculty member who has excelled in the Department's goals of enriching knowledge, transmitting understanding and providing excellence in the delivery of care.

Outstanding Clinical Faculty Award

2011 Recipient: Mahmoud Okasha, MD
The recipient for this award is chosen from the voluntary clinical faculty and has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to the Department, on a completely voluntary basis. The areas of service include, but are not limited to, teaching, supervision and committee work.

Resident Awards

Laughlin Award

2011 Recipients: Carla Marienfeld, MD and Kalyani Subramanyam, MD
For more than thirty years, the Laughlin Family Foundation has honored outstanding residents in psychiatric training programs. Award recipients are selected by the senior faculty at their university. This award is presented to the outstanding 4th year resident who combines clinical and scholarly excellence.

Resident Teaching Award

2011 Recipient: Nabyl Tejani, MD
The Resident Teaching Award is given in memory of our former resident and colleague, Dr. James Longhurst. It acknowledges and recognizes the contribution of a Yale Psychiatry Resident as an outstanding teacher and role model. The residents are nominated for this award by students, peers, and faculty.

Ira Levine Award

2011 Recipient: Soudabeh Givrad, MD
The Ira Levine Award was established in 2004 to recognize outstanding PGY-2 psychiatry residents who best embody the qualities of clinical excellence, breadth of learning, and devotion to the care of severe psychiatric illness exemplified by Dr. Levine.

Psychiatry Residents' Association Awards

Benjamin S. Bunney Award

2011 Recipient: Tichianaa Armah, MD
The Benjamin S. Bunney Award is awarded annually to residents who have demonstrated exceptional service to the Psychiatry Residents’ Association (PRA) mission of advocacy for residents and patients, clinical care, and education.

PRA Teaching Award

2011 Recipients: Catherine Chiles, MD and Vinod Srihari, MD
This award acknowledges the outstanding contribution of one or more attending physicians to the education and development of the residents.

PRA Supportive Services Award

2011 Recipient: Peggy Podaloff, RN
This award, whose recipient is chosen by the Psychiatry Residents’ Association (PRA), goes to an outstanding nurse or social worker.
