Exciting Leadership Development Opportunities for YSM Faculty

September 14, 2022

In an effort to harness and grow the full professional potential of YSM faculty, the Offices of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) and Academic and Professional Development (OAPD) within the YSM Dean’s Office have successfully spearheaded several leadership development initiatives tailored to individuals at all stages of career development.

Now in its fifth semester, the Women’s Leadership Development Program offered through the Office of Women in Medicine and Science (under the tutelage of ODEI) empowers early career faculty to expand their communication, networking, and time management skills, pursue their fullest leadership potential, and build enduring, supportive relationships with one another.

Also in its fifth semester is the MORE (Minority Organization for Retention and Expansion) Coaching Program, an individualized 1:1 coaching engagement designed to support YSM faculty members from URiM backgrounds in articulating professional goals and leadership vision and strategy. Preliminary data reveal a high level of retention and assuming of new leadership roles and/or academic promotion on the part of former program participants.

The Office of Academic and Professional Development (OAPD) has also taken up the leadership development charge. With topics ranging from effective communication, teamwork, conscious accountability, and leadership vision, OAPD offers up to three seminars per year to YSM departments (for more information, please see: https://medicine.yale.edu/oapd/facultydevelopment/leadershipdevelopmentseminars/). OAPD also runs a referral-based Communications Program, designed to educate and empower faculty members who may be challenged in their efforts to communicate effectively in the workplace.

In response to growing interest, both offices are currently expanding their offerings. A brand-new ODEI leadership development program for YSM Diversity Champions will be unveiled this semester, as will an expanded and refined OAPD leadership development training program for newly-minted Section Chiefs.

For more information about these exciting opportunities, please contact Michele Carpenter (michele.carpenter@yale.edu) within the ODEI or the OAPD- Academic Professionalism and Leadership Team at oapd.acadprof@yale.edu.
