E - Harkness Gym

This basement gym may be small, and a little dark (despite the bright yellow walls), but it is mighty full of perks. First, it is right across the street from the hospital at 35 York Street. So, you can bring your gym bag to work, and pop in for a short run or lift on your way home. Second, it is free to residents! All you have to do is go to http://housing.yale.edu/resources/harkness-gym-membership, click the link, and use your net ID to apply online. They usually activate your Yale University Badge in 1-2 business days, and then you can access it whenever. Third, it is open 24/7, which as we all know, is very handy for the busy resident. And, fourth, there are pretty much always machines available (I guess med students and residents don't exercise enough to fill a small gym).

Overall, it has about 5 treadmills (I never have a problem snagging one), 7 ellipticals, 4 bikes, one stair master, a few weight machines and a number of free weights. The machines were all replaced this fall and have their own TVs with a list of available shows to watch. There is also wifi, in case you want to bring your phone or ipad for Netflix/ podcasts.

Lastly, a quick word on hitting the gym. As a tired and overworked resident, it is hard to be motivated to do almost anything. I find that if I wait for motivation to hit, I will never ever exercise. On the other hand, if I don't think about it much and just start, I manage to work-out almost everyday. Most importantly, I always feel better once I start (and finish :) So, next time you are weighing whether or not to exercise, stop deciding and just start moving...you might be surprised to learn that the hardest part, feeling the motivation, is actually superfluous.
