The ASTS award recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to transplant surgery.

Ramesh K. Batra, MD, associate professor of surgery (transplant), has been selected to receive the 2024 Rising Stars in Transplantation Award from the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS).

Dr. Batra is an abdominal transplant surgeon who specializes in hepatobiliary operations for liver tumors and biliary tract disorders. His research interests focus on extended spectrum organs—finding ways to maximize organs that may seem less than perfect to get the best benefit for a suitable recipient and alleviating the ethical barriers in organ donation and transplantation.

Dr. Batra received his medical degree from Sarojini Naidu Medical College and trained for a decade in adult and pediatric transplantation in London. He then completed the ASTS abdominal transplant fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in liver, kidney, and pancreas transplants along with pediatric liver transplants at Phoenix Children's Hospital. He joined the Yale School of Medicine faculty in 2017, where he built a high-volume liver transplant center at Yale New Haven Health. A sought-after expert on ethics, Dr. Batra also serves on national and international committees.

The ASTS award will be presented during the 2024 Winter Symposium, held January 11 - 14, 2023 in Miami, FL.
