Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Update (September 2021)

September 14, 2021
by Inginia Genao

In the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Internal Medicine (ODEIM), we are very excited about the start of the fall semester. September 2021 marks the official launch of the new Race, Bias, and Advocacy in Medicine (RBAM) Distinction Pathway. Learn more about the pathway in the newsfeed.

On August 9, I had the pleasure to serve as guest speaker for the White Coat Ceremony. I shared my personal essay, An MD Made in America, and shared the symbolism that my white coat has had in my life. You can learn more about the ceremony through this story written by Abigail Roth.

Currently, we have two people representing the over 400 department staff within the ODEIM office. We have representatives from the Sections of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine and Endocrinology & Metabolism, but we would like more staff to participate. Please contact us if you are interested in learning more.

The website continues to expand. A new section has been created to highlight the working groups, which are focused on Innovation, Early Pipeline, Recruitment, Retention, Funding & Resources, Data/Metrics, and PR/Marketing. They will begin meeting on a regular basis this month. If you would like to learn more, take a look at the site and/or contact the chair or co-chair. A net ID is required to view the material.

For this month’s “Voices of DEI” we highlight Kathleen Akgün, MD, MS. You can read this column on the website and via social media. I hope you enjoy it! If you wish to participate, complete the survey at this link.

Please contact me with any questions regarding the department’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the Diversity Committee, and/or ODEIM. As always, thank you for all you do to make Yale a better place.

Sincerely,

Inginia Genao, MD, FACP

Associate Chair, Diversity & Inclusion
