Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Update (April 2021)

April 13, 2021
by Inginia Genao

In last month’s message, I announced the vice chiefs of diversity, equity and inclusion in six sections. I am happy to announce the vice chiefs of two additional sections:

  • Cardiovascular Medicine: Lauren Baldassarre, MD
  • Digestive Diseases: Vandana Khungar, MD, MSc

I will announce the vice chiefs for the Sections of Medical Oncology, Nephrology and Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, and the Staff vice chief in an upcoming message.

Congratulations to our new vice chiefs, who will partner with the clinicians, researchers, educators, and staff in their sections to support the implementation plan of our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts as part of the department’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Internal Medicine (ODEIM).

After our record-breaking URiM recruitment dinner on January 28, we are pleased to announce the results of this year’s URiM residency match:

We are also excited to announce that the first Medical Mornings was held on April 11 from 2 – 3 p.m. on zoom. Medical Mornings is a new outreach series encouraging kids in grades 6 - 12 to pursue careers in healthcare. Mahalia Desruisseaux, MD; David Smith, MD, FACC, FACP; and Heidi Zapata, MD, PhD; shared their pathways to their current careers. Participants were able to interact with our physicians and ask questions about their work and life. If you would like to participate in a future Medical Mornings, let me know!

All these efforts undoubtedly contribute to a better Yale, but we are the first to admit that we as an institution and as a nation, have a lot of work to do. We can’t become complacent; the horrific events, including the killing of innocent people, continue in our American soil. Let’s ask or continue to ask ourselves what each of us can do to dismantle racism, prejudice, hate, xenophobia…and let’s act.

Thank you for all you do to make Yale a better place.

Sincerely,

Inginia Genao, MD, FACP
