Clifford W. Bogue, MD, has been appointed chair of the Department of Pediatrics, effective August 1, 2017. Bogue is professor of pediatrics (critical care) and had been serving as interim chair of the department since 2015.
“Cliff is a strong advocate for the department. He is committed to strengthening its research mission, developing a cadre of new leaders in pediatrics, and seeing faculty and staff flourish,” said Robert J. Alpern, MD, dean and Ensign Professor of Medicine.
Bogue, who was named chief medical officer at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital in 2014, has held a number of medical school and hospital leadership positions since he joined the faculty in 1993. He has served as director of pediatric critical care transport, medical director of the pediatric intensive care unit, director of the pediatric critical care fellowship, chief of pediatric critical care medicine and associate chair for strategic planning.
For over 20 years he has directed a research program funded by the National Institutes of Health on the developmental biology of the lung, liver, and cardiovascular system. His laboratory has made important contributions to the genetic pathways involved in embryonic organ development, including the identification of genetic pathways critical to the formation of the liver and biliary system, as well as the cardiovascular system.
There are incredible opportunities for clinical care, education, and research if we are successful in building collaborative bridges to other programs and departments at the school.

As chair, Bogue would like to raise the stature of Pediatrics so that it is one of the pre-eminent departments in the country. He plans to accomplish this by bolstering and expanding the range of high-quality clinical services the department delivers in conjunction with Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital and fortifying research within the department and with other programs. Plans are underway, for example, to merge the department’s neurodevelopmental services with the Child Study Center to provide opportunities for joint clinical care and research collaborations.
He is also committed to training the next generation of pediatric clinician scientists and has been actively involved in training students, residents, and fellows. He is interested in developing a research pathway with expanded infrastructure and mentorship for residents and fellows who are interested in biomedical research. The department will expand its efforts to enhance the number of faculty and trainees from underrepresented minorities in medicine, an effort that has already begun.
Bogue has been honored with the Mae Gailani Junior Faculty Award, the Norman J. Siegel Faculty Award, and a pediatric fellow teaching award, among others. He graduated with distinction from the University of Virginia in 1981 and completed his MD at his alma mater in 1985. He was chief resident in pediatrics at Vanderbilt University before completing his fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at Yale.
