Biotech entrepreneur to share career tips at Alumni Grand Rounds

Medical school alumnus Fred Aslan, MD ’02, MBA, will give the second talk in a new series sponsored by the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs that offers current students a view of potential career paths. His talk, "Thinking of Leveraging Your MD or PhD for a Career in Business? Everything I Wish I Knew While at Yale Med," will take place on Tuesday, April 19, at 5 p.m. in the Beaumont Room, Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar Street, New Haven.

Dr. Aslan is the founder and CEO of ADVANCE Medical, one of the largest medical device and diagnostics companies in Brazil. He has raised over $25 million from leading U.S. venture capital funds and Brazilian investors to build ADVANCE Medical. Today the company has more than 150 employees, a broad portfolio of products, and leading commercial coverage in Brazil. Dr. Aslan is also a vice president at the venture capital fund Venrock, which he joined in 2006. At Venrock, he was a co-founder and board member of Receptos Pharmaceuticals, a biotech company that listed on NASDAQ in 2013 and was subsequently acquired by Celgene for over $8 billion. He also led Venrock’s investment in Zeltiq, a medical device company that listed on NASDAQ in 2011 and today is valued at over $700 million. Prior to Venrock, he was director of business development and head of investor relations at CuraGen Corporation, a NASDAQ-listed oncology-focused biotech company. Prior to CuraGen, he was an associate at Boston Consulting Group, where he worked on strategic projects for Fortune 500 healthcare companies.

Dr. Aslan is a regular speaker on entrepreneurship and venture capital at healthcare industry events in San Francisco and Silicon Valley. He was named the 2014 Business Professional of the Year by the Brazilian government, recognizing the achievements of Brazilian professionals living outside of Brazil. He is also a board member of BayBrazil, a Silicon-Valley-based not-for-profit organization with one of the United States’ largest communities of Brazilian professionals and U.S. professionals who are interested in Brazil, helping to facilitate ties between Silicon Valley and Brazil. Dr. Aslan has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Duke University, a medical degree from Yale School of Medicine, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
