May 03, 2023
  • 00:00Hello, my name is Madison,
  • 00:02and today I'll be talking about my poster
  • 00:04called The Role of Social Support and
  • 00:06Loneliness in the Relationship Between
  • 00:09borderline personality disorder and
  • 00:10suicide risk among Incarcerated Adults.
  • 00:14UPD is a mental disorder that
  • 00:16is very over represented within
  • 00:18the criminal justice system.
  • 00:20Oftentimes, it's associated with severe
  • 00:22parasuicidal or suicidal behavior.
  • 00:24The suicidal behavior presents a management
  • 00:26concern within jails and prisons.
  • 00:28This highlights the importance of
  • 00:30understanding mechanisms that increase
  • 00:32suicide risk for incarcerated people.
  • 00:34With BPD, prior research has identified
  • 00:36interpersonal factors such as lack
  • 00:38of perceived social support and
  • 00:40loneliness as contributors to suicidal
  • 00:42behavior among non incarcerated.
  • 00:44People with BPD This study seeks
  • 00:47to examine this relationship among
  • 00:50people who are incarcerated.
  • 00:52We had 184 people who participated
  • 00:54in our study and they were all asked
  • 00:57to complete a structured interview
  • 00:59for the DSM 4 Access to Disorders,
  • 01:02the Beck Scale for suicidal Ideation,
  • 01:04the Multidimensional scale for
  • 01:05Perceived Social support,
  • 01:06and the UCLA Loneliness Scale.
  • 01:08You can see here that all of
  • 01:10our variables were correlated.
  • 01:12We had a total of 69 people who
  • 01:15met criteria for BPD and then below
  • 01:18you can see other descriptive
  • 01:20statistics for our sample.
  • 01:22The first model that examined the
  • 01:25mediating effect of social support in
  • 01:27their relationship between BPD diagnosis
  • 01:29and suicidal ideation was significant,
  • 01:32and the model looking at the mediating
  • 01:35effect of loneliness in the relationship
  • 01:37between BPD diagnosis and pseudo
  • 01:40suicidal ideation was also significant.
  • 01:42This indicates that individuals with
  • 01:44BPD who are incarcerated could benefit
  • 01:46from interventions that address
  • 01:48interpersonal relationships and loneliness.
  • 01:50These interventions may help to reduce
  • 01:53suicidal or parasuicidal behaviors among
  • 01:55individuals with BPD who are incarcerated.
  • 01:58Future research should examine
  • 01:59other mechanisms to the relationship
  • 02:01between BPD and suicide among
  • 02:03individuals who are incarcerated.
  • 02:05Thank you.
