  • 00:00Everyone, I think that when Dean
  • 00:03Brown decided to create a structure
  • 00:06for the support of junior scientists,
  • 00:09both physician scientists and PhD scientists,
  • 00:11she had an idea based on her prior
  • 00:15experience and based on the data from
  • 00:18institutions across the country that
  • 00:21really the most critical phase in people's
  • 00:24development is the phase that you're in
  • 00:27right now and that by leveraging resources.
  • 00:31For your cohort, we're going to be able
  • 00:33to advance science institutionally,
  • 00:35and I think that that's a that's
  • 00:37a very true statement,
  • 00:39and what you see today,
  • 00:41what will present to you today is the
  • 00:44framework for a beginning of a much larger
  • 00:47structure for the support of science,
  • 00:49an collaborative science that I
  • 00:51think that you'll see developed,
  • 00:52and so we wanted to introduce you to,
  • 00:55to to what we plan to do,
  • 00:58and it hope at some point
  • 01:00also recognize that.
  • 01:01Fact that you as a cohort are
  • 01:03going to be rising up together.
  • 01:06It will be providing each other with
  • 01:08a significant amount of support and
  • 01:11potentially collaboration moving forward,
  • 01:12and I think that that really
  • 01:14is one of the main utilities of
  • 01:17the Janeway society overall,
  • 01:19so we'll go to our next slide.
  • 01:26So the purpose of the Office of
  • 01:28Physician Scientists and Scientists
  • 01:29Development is to really try to address
  • 01:32the practical challenges that people
  • 01:34encounter at different career stages,
  • 01:36and I think you all are at
  • 01:38one stage of development.
  • 01:40But we recognize that there are distinct
  • 01:42challenges that people experience in
  • 01:44midcareer and later in their career,
  • 01:46all of which we hope to ultimately
  • 01:48be able to address.
  • 01:50We also want to create community.
  • 01:52I think that the scientific enterprise is 1.
  • 01:55Where mentor ship of near peers and
  • 01:58Mentor ship that you received from
  • 02:00peers or five 1015 and 20 years
  • 02:03ahead of you really is part of the
  • 02:06engine that drives us forward.
  • 02:07And so as we create structures for
  • 02:10individuals at different stages
  • 02:12of development,
  • 02:13things very important for us to reach
  • 02:15back to those that come before us,
  • 02:18including graduate students and
  • 02:19MD PhD students and individuals
  • 02:21who are just beginning physician
  • 02:23scientist training pathways and so.
  • 02:26We really want to have multi phasic,
  • 02:28multi level mentor ship that
  • 02:29spans all phase training.
  • 02:31We want to make sure that people have
  • 02:33the time that they need to do the
  • 02:36research that they propose to do.
  • 02:38We want to ensure that there's adequate
  • 02:40research support and we really hope
  • 02:42that by bringing people together we
  • 02:44might be able to foster collaborations
  • 02:46that will ultimately enable Yale to
  • 02:48be a preeminent institution not only
  • 02:50for training scientists but also
  • 02:52for the science that we produce.
  • 02:54Next slide.
  • 03:08OK, so the leadership of the office and and
  • 03:11like many offices you know we we nucleates.
  • 03:14And then we grow and so Dean Brown
  • 03:16charged me with developing the office
  • 03:18and really the first thing we needed
  • 03:21to do was think about the mission of
  • 03:24the office and how we might achieve it.
  • 03:26And so I was lucky to recruit Nick
  • 03:29from my CCI because one of the
  • 03:32things that we really hope to do.
  • 03:34As you move forward,
  • 03:36be very data driven about the
  • 03:38initiatives that we enact and
  • 03:40look at what the efficacy is.
  • 03:43We also joined by Niyati who
  • 03:45is the director of Scientists,
  • 03:47Diversity and Inclusion really
  • 03:49seeks to ensure equity of access to
  • 03:52resources for individuals from urj
  • 03:55groups were joined by Jean Shapiro
  • 03:57who will help us as the director
  • 04:00of Grant writing and Evaluation.
  • 04:02Many of you took his grant writing course.
  • 04:05In your initial applications
  • 04:07for Group Development awards,
  • 04:09it's also offered for for our level
  • 04:12awards for expanding that course
  • 04:14to make it more accessible for
  • 04:17individuals will also talk about
  • 04:19a study section program that gene
  • 04:22and I are going to Co run and we're
  • 04:25also currently recruiting a senior
  • 04:27scientist to be a director of PhD
  • 04:30scientists development really,
  • 04:32to specifically highlight and identify
  • 04:34areas that we can be supporting.
  • 04:37PhD scientist development as well next time.
  • 04:49So generally society itself,
  • 04:51I think you guys all saw the
  • 04:54announcement and even asked to join it
  • 04:57and we're very happy that you're here,
  • 05:00but we really want to create
  • 05:02a cohort of developing.
  • 05:04Scientists will have special access
  • 05:06to infrastructure and career
  • 05:07development resources that should
  • 05:09hopefully help to accelerate the
  • 05:11transition to independence and
  • 05:13so eligibility is established,
  • 05:14including faculty appointments
  • 05:16and protected time.
  • 05:17Being a Pi on very specific types
  • 05:20of Group development awards.
  • 05:22But this is specifically for people
  • 05:23who haven't yet made the R1 transition.
  • 05:26I know many of you are on the cusp of that.
  • 05:29When you achieve a narrow one,
  • 05:31we're not going to ask you to leave,
  • 05:33we actually want you to stay as long
  • 05:35as you find that Janeway society
  • 05:37continues to provide benefit for you,
  • 05:39and we hope that many of you who
  • 05:41make the R1 transition will also
  • 05:43be people who will be contributing
  • 05:45back in Group in Group discussions
  • 05:47and in providing leadership for
  • 05:49the next cohort of individuals
  • 05:51who joined Janeway in the future.
  • 05:53But we will ask that as you remain
  • 05:55in Janeway that your chairs and
  • 05:57section chiefs continue to ensure
  • 05:59that you have protected time.
  • 06:01That's adequate to do the research
  • 06:03that you propose to do next time.
  • 06:07So just to look at what
  • 06:10the membership looks like,
  • 06:11we're evenly split between physician
  • 06:13scientists and PhD scientists.
  • 06:14If you look my doctoral degree.
  • 06:18So we have a 5050 break between
  • 06:21MD's and MD PHD's about we have a
  • 06:24large cohort of PhD scientists.
  • 06:27The mechanisms that individuals are
  • 06:29supported by run the gamut of the Kays,
  • 06:32VA Career Development Awards.
  • 06:34Why CCI Scholar Awards K 90 Nines
  • 06:37and those who've transitioned RO the
  • 06:40department o'll representation is largely
  • 06:42matched to the size of department's,
  • 06:45and you can see that we have
  • 06:48significant representation from.
  • 06:50Psychiatry internal medicine,
  • 06:51Pediatrics as well as broad
  • 06:55representation across really all
  • 06:57of the departments that exist here
  • 06:59at the medical school next time.
  • 07:05So one of the things that we that
  • 07:07we hope to do is bring everyone
  • 07:10together and we're going to do this
  • 07:12in a forum that we're going to
  • 07:14call Jamie society First Fridays,
  • 07:15and so these will generally be
  • 07:17the first Friday of every month
  • 07:19at noon and Cohen Auditorium.
  • 07:21And as we see, COVID restrictions dropped.
  • 07:23We're hoping that we can move
  • 07:25to a hybrid model where we have
  • 07:27those who wish to be in person in
  • 07:29person and those who wish to come
  • 07:31in via zoom coming in via Zoom.
  • 07:33But what we really hope to
  • 07:35do with the First Fridays.
  • 07:37Is provide people with some of
  • 07:39the training that you frequently
  • 07:40get in professional development
  • 07:42courses and so these are.
  • 07:44This is a program in really leadership,
  • 07:47mentorship and management.
  • 07:48And so there are a number of
  • 07:50topics that will be included in
  • 07:52here that includes some of these
  • 07:55questions about how do you achieve
  • 07:57goal setting and accountability
  • 07:58in mentor mentee relationships.
  • 08:00This may be a little bit a little
  • 08:02bit about you and your mentor,
  • 08:05but very soon it's going to become.
  • 08:07About you and your mentees.
  • 08:09A lot of aspects that are going to
  • 08:12come from the School of Business.
  • 08:14You know.
  • 08:15How do we motivate people,
  • 08:17incentives, and motivation?
  • 08:18How do we communicate?
  • 08:20How do we resolve conflict?
  • 08:21How do we make decisions that are
  • 08:24important in our lives that help
  • 08:26us to affect organizational change?
  • 08:28Will talk about diversity,
  • 08:29will talk about bias,
  • 08:31will talk about balance,
  • 08:32will be drawing upon colleagues
  • 08:34from organizational psychology
  • 08:35as well as we move forward.
  • 08:38And we'll also talk about practical things,
  • 08:41including workshops about applying for jobs.
  • 08:43While we all hope that you're going
  • 08:45to stay here at Yelp for a lifetime,
  • 08:48I think it's important to understand
  • 08:51what the rules of the road are
  • 08:53when it comes to thinking about
  • 08:56looking for for initial jobs.
  • 08:57Understanding faculty ranks,
  • 08:59tracks and promotions,
  • 09:00and thinking about transitioning
  • 09:01to our own funding next time.
  • 09:07Will also have an annual retreat and at
  • 09:09the annual retreat we hope to highlight
  • 09:12the science of those of you who are in
  • 09:15the society in graded sorts of ways so
  • 09:18people who are early in their K words
  • 09:21will have a poster session with faculty.
  • 09:23Discussants for those who are more
  • 09:25senior and are heading towards your R1
  • 09:28will be doing short oral presentations.
  • 09:30The leadership of the medical
  • 09:32school will be there along with the
  • 09:35distinguished guest who is.
  • 09:36Accomplished in the field,
  • 09:38they will provide a keynote address.
  • 09:40It'll be a day long experience at
  • 09:42a local site initially at Yale West
  • 09:45Campus in May of 2022 we will get the
  • 09:48date out to you as soon as possible so
  • 09:51that you can mark it on your calendars.
  • 09:54And we also hope to really develop
  • 09:56a mentorship network,
  • 09:57so we hope to be able to connect
  • 09:59you with mentors who you'd like
  • 10:02to have connections with,
  • 10:03but one of the ways that will be doing that.
  • 10:07Is will be engaging in regular meeting
  • 10:09so I will be meeting with all of the
  • 10:12members of the Janeways society at
  • 10:14least once a year to hear a little bit
  • 10:16about your science to hear about the
  • 10:18things that you need and also to see
  • 10:20how we can leverage resources for you
  • 10:22affectively within the institution.
  • 10:24And so these are informal meetings,
  • 10:25but one of the other things that I've
  • 10:28discovered is from the very first
  • 10:30week that I was in this position.
  • 10:32I was receiving calls and I want to tell
  • 10:34you that the door is open if there is
  • 10:37a problem that you need to have solved.
  • 10:40It's related to your experience here at
  • 10:42the institution as a junior scientist,
  • 10:44you know use us as a resource and
  • 10:47whether that's a question of you
  • 10:49know I don't have to protect it.
  • 10:51Time that's present in my contract
  • 10:53or sometimes coming from department's
  • 10:54asking questions the other way.
  • 10:56We're really here to help solve these
  • 10:58problems as an additional resource.
  • 11:00An additional pathway in addition to
  • 11:02the leadership that you have within
  • 11:04your own department's next time.
  • 11:10So in terms of resources we are
  • 11:12launching the Yale physician
  • 11:13Scientist Development Awards program.
  • 11:15This is a parallel career development
  • 11:17program to the Y CCI awards,
  • 11:19but that really allows
  • 11:21us to focus on patients.
  • 11:22I'm sorry on individuals who are
  • 11:24in the pre K period to provide
  • 11:26additional support so this won't
  • 11:28be relevant necessarily to use
  • 11:30individuals except for one wrinkle
  • 11:32that I'll talk about in a moment.
  • 11:35But it is an important program which I'd
  • 11:38really like to highlight and I'd like you to.
  • 11:41Encourage your colleagues were earlier
  • 11:43in their career development to apply
  • 11:45to this awards program, which does
  • 11:47provide 75% salary support in 2020.
  • 11:49Thousand of research support
  • 11:50per year for two years.
  • 11:52That said,
  • 11:53individual K Awardee's are not
  • 11:55eligible for salary support
  • 11:56that can apply for up to $20,000
  • 11:58in research support each year.
  • 12:00The competition is closed for this year,
  • 12:02but in future years many of you
  • 12:05would be eligible to apply for an
  • 12:08additional 20,000 of research support.
  • 12:11Next slide.
  • 12:13So I think one of the most exciting
  • 12:16resources that we're going to be
  • 12:18launching is a grants library,
  • 12:19and so our goal is to ultimately
  • 12:21provide a resource across funding
  • 12:23mechanisms that includes things like FKS,
  • 12:25TS Ours and others to increase the
  • 12:27success rate of Yale applicants.
  • 12:29And I think that you know,
  • 12:31we recognize that every time
  • 12:32you go to write a grant,
  • 12:34the best way to write it is to get
  • 12:36a few others from other people who
  • 12:39have attacked the same mechanism,
  • 12:41because you can learn a lot about how to.
  • 12:44Structure your aims how to structure
  • 12:46your plan and how to in some cases
  • 12:48create a responsive revision.
  • 12:50If you're going in for an A1 application,
  • 12:53and so we're going to launch the
  • 12:55Grants Library on June 1st and we
  • 12:57actually are going to ask you members
  • 12:59of the Janeway Society to help us
  • 13:02to develop the grants library.
  • 13:04So we're going to have a three month
  • 13:06period where we collect grants and
  • 13:09what we're really relying on you
  • 13:11to do is to provide us with your
  • 13:13career development awards and so.
  • 13:15We are going to do a quick search via
  • 13:18NIH reporter and other mechanisms to
  • 13:20identify those of you who've received
  • 13:23grants will be sending you a survey
  • 13:26asking you to provide us with authorization.
  • 13:28So we're going to make this
  • 13:31very low impact on you.
  • 13:33Authorization to get a copy
  • 13:35of your grant from OSR.
  • 13:36We will redact sensitive information
  • 13:38such as salary, for example,
  • 13:40from it.
  • 13:41Once we've redacted that grant,
  • 13:43we will provide it back to you for
  • 13:46final approval for submission.
  • 13:48Within within the grants database.
  • 13:50So this is all going to be housed in Red Cap.
  • 13:55We will allow you to embargo your
  • 13:57grants or if you feel that the
  • 13:59science is presented in your grant
  • 14:01is very sensitive and yet you
  • 14:02agree with the idea that you know.
  • 14:04Sharing your grant will help
  • 14:06future generations.
  • 14:06We can allow you to embargo it
  • 14:09for the period that you state.
  • 14:12And then after the initial three
  • 14:14months is allowed us to accrue grants.
  • 14:16We will allow individuals to apply
  • 14:18to the library to access grants,
  • 14:20and so we are at the same time as
  • 14:23we're asking all of you to deposit.
  • 14:26Your case will be looking at individuals
  • 14:28have made cater our transition,
  • 14:30asking them to deposit their ours
  • 14:32and getting a large cohort of
  • 14:34ours that are also within the
  • 14:36database within the library.
  • 14:38So Janeway membership will have
  • 14:40first access to the Grants library.
  • 14:42Will have a simple application process
  • 14:44that asks for people to identify
  • 14:47those individuals who are either
  • 14:48seeking a first K award or seeking
  • 14:51a first R1 award for initial access.
  • 14:53When you access the grants library,
  • 14:55it will be open.
  • 14:56You'll be able to search
  • 14:57by funding mechanism.
  • 14:59You'll be able to search by whether
  • 15:01this is in a zero or a one application,
  • 15:04but one of the things that
  • 15:06we will ask you
  • 15:08to do is to sign a code of conduct because
  • 15:11will be tracking your access to grants.
  • 15:14You know, I don't think that we're
  • 15:16going to be facing situations where
  • 15:18we're going to have individuals who
  • 15:21are claiming that plagiarism is a curd,
  • 15:23but we have the capacity to
  • 15:25look for that in the future,
  • 15:27and so this is really an honor based system.
  • 15:31We're also going to ask those
  • 15:33of you who access the system to
  • 15:35tell us what your experiences,
  • 15:37how was it to navigate it?
  • 15:39How is it to use it, and ultimately,
  • 15:42whether it contributed to outcomes we have.
  • 15:45A1 question, which I'd be happy to field
  • 15:47right now if you want to go ahead and ask it.
  • 15:51Hi, I'm Kristen one you I'd like
  • 15:53to know if we'll be able to
  • 15:56search for grants based on topic.
  • 15:58Nick, can you help fill that in?
  • 16:00I think we can.
  • 16:02Yeah, so we'll have the titles in
  • 16:04there but will also put in abstracts
  • 16:06from an age reporter as long as as
  • 16:08well as sort of research terms so
  • 16:09you'll be able to search by that.
  • 16:13So there are.
  • 16:14There's a keyword library that will
  • 16:15be used so that we can have people
  • 16:18search by keyword and that exists
  • 16:19within within Redcap right now and
  • 16:21we'll do our best to try to attach
  • 16:24those and one of the things that
  • 16:26we can do when we provide you with
  • 16:28your grant for approval is we can
  • 16:30allow you to select the relevant
  • 16:33keywords for searching.
  • 16:34We have additional questions,
  • 16:36uh, Louisa says,
  • 16:37you're going to store foundation
  • 16:39grants as well.
  • 16:40Yes, by all means we intend to
  • 16:43include foundation grants as well,
  • 16:44including the Ms Doors,
  • 16:46Duke and others.
  • 16:47And then next question from Ambrose can be
  • 16:50searched by institute or study section.
  • 16:52Nick, we can do that as well.
  • 16:55Yeah, you can.
  • 16:56Search by institute.
  • 16:57We hadn't planned on
  • 16:58searching by study section,
  • 17:00but that's something we could
  • 17:02look at institute for sure, yeah?
  • 17:04We don't have study section
  • 17:06built into it currently.
  • 17:08But it, along with the grant,
  • 17:10will also be the pink sheets,
  • 17:12and so you'll be able to look at both the
  • 17:14grant and the comments on the other side,
  • 17:17and I think that that's an important thing.
  • 17:19And for grants that have gone
  • 17:21through revision,
  • 17:21you'll be able to look at the A zero,
  • 17:24the comments,
  • 17:25and the RE submission,
  • 17:26which will include the response as well
  • 17:28as the as well as the value as well as
  • 17:31a summary statement on the other side.
  • 17:33So I think this is going to be
  • 17:35immensely useful to all of you as
  • 17:38your Azure as you're moving forward.
  • 17:40Any other questions about the Grants library?
  • 17:44We have a question going back to Janeway,
  • 17:47so the 20,000 grand opportunity
  • 17:48this is correct.
  • 17:50It is currently available to
  • 17:52physician scientists and one of
  • 17:54the things that I am seeking to
  • 17:56do is to create equity.
  • 17:58You may recognize that this
  • 17:59is an office that initially
  • 18:01was named the Office of Physician
  • 18:03Scientists Development and as we assessed
  • 18:06the landscape of the institution,
  • 18:08we realized that this needed to
  • 18:10be an office that was open to all.
  • 18:13To all scientists, including PhD scientists.
  • 18:18I will say that the why CCI program does have
  • 18:22a $20,000 opportunity which is in parallel,
  • 18:25which is open to those who have pH
  • 18:29D as well as MD as well as MD PhD.
  • 18:34Scientists but one of the things that
  • 18:36we seek to do in our PSD is ensure that
  • 18:40there's equity of access to all of the
  • 18:43resources that we're talking about here,
  • 18:46and so I assume that that is the
  • 18:49that is the gist of the question
  • 18:52that you're raising here,
  • 18:53and so we see comments here
  • 18:56and also seek equity.
  • 18:59Other questions. Because we move on
  • 19:02to some other important resources.
  • 19:08Are clinicians with PhD
  • 19:10only eligible for the full?
  • 19:13Award so I. Dan, let me.
  • 19:20Let me talk with you offline
  • 19:23about that so that we can so that
  • 19:27we can address that completely,
  • 19:31and so I can understand the situation as you.
  • 19:36As you describe it,
  • 19:37Vanessa asked the question,
  • 19:38can we continue to participate
  • 19:40in the Jane Lee Society if we
  • 19:42move to a new institution where
  • 19:43we transition to independence?
  • 19:45This is a question that you know
  • 19:47we haven't actually conceived of
  • 19:48because we're expecting that every
  • 19:50single one of you is going to stay
  • 19:52here for the rest of your life.
  • 19:55You know,
  • 19:56I think that our intention is
  • 19:58to make this an open platform,
  • 20:00but that ultimately it's going
  • 20:02to be something that's relatively
  • 20:04relatively low specific,
  • 20:06and so you know you'll probably
  • 20:08stop receiving notifications
  • 20:09when you're available.
  • 20:10Email closes, but you know, I don't see us.
  • 20:15Ever taking this away from anyone?
  • 20:23Alright, next slide please.
  • 20:28Alright, so the grant writing course many
  • 20:30of you have created in this you know,
  • 20:33I think that the goal has always been
  • 20:35to increase the rate of successful
  • 20:38K applications and to enable us to
  • 20:40achieve kata R transitions and so our
  • 20:43initial approach has been to partner
  • 20:45with YCCIIMP program to offer the script
  • 20:47writing course both in the fall semester
  • 20:49as well as in the spring semester.
  • 20:52As you know, the course of sections for
  • 20:55crew development and our level applications.
  • 20:57We seek to have experienced faculty mentors.
  • 21:01Lead the sections of this an overall,
  • 21:04we've had some really great people
  • 21:06do this over the years.
  • 21:08We will encourage participants to
  • 21:10engage in seminars about strategy about
  • 21:12strategies that are matched to the
  • 21:15mechanism that they are applying for.
  • 21:17The writing is paste over the course
  • 21:19of the semester,
  • 21:20which I think is very helpful.
  • 21:23Faculty reviewers are chosen who
  • 21:24are who are matched to your field.
  • 21:27So at the end there is a study section
  • 21:30that's a part of the grant writing course,
  • 21:33and historically participants have
  • 21:34experienced high success rates.
  • 21:35One of the benefits of being in the
  • 21:38Janeway Society is that the typical $550
  • 21:41registration costs will be covered by OH PSD.
  • 21:43If you choose to participate
  • 21:45in this in the future.
  • 21:47Next time.
  • 21:52We also are going to be piloting a
  • 21:55paste manuscript writing program.
  • 21:57For those of you who are interested
  • 21:59and we are actually very interested
  • 22:01in having individuals who are
  • 22:03interested in writing manage groups
  • 22:05reach out to us and let us know.
  • 22:08So we want to identify our first
  • 22:10cohorts of individuals who'd like to
  • 22:12dissipate and paste management training,
  • 22:14and ultimately, the idea is that we want
  • 22:17to provide a forum for participants to
  • 22:20write manuscripts with faculty guidance,
  • 22:22pure accountability.
  • 22:22An expert review,
  • 22:24and so we'll do our first pilot in the fall.
  • 22:28This will be coordinating with the
  • 22:30Portroe Center for Teaching and Learning
  • 22:32and why some faculty to offer introduced
  • 22:35introductory group sessions on figure
  • 22:37design approaches to outlining in
  • 22:39manuscript composition and submission
  • 22:40and review process separately.
  • 22:425 to 8 writers will be paired to the faculty
  • 22:45mentor over the course of five weeks.
  • 22:48Individuals will be asked to compose
  • 22:51individual sections of manuscripts
  • 22:53and then to conduct peer review.
  • 22:56And that is, you know,
  • 22:58submitting your completed draft
  • 22:59to other people who are going
  • 23:01through the course with you,
  • 23:03and then the faculty section leader will
  • 23:06also participate in reviewing that as well.
  • 23:09At the end,
  • 23:10we will ask you to identify individuals
  • 23:13who you feel would be the best
  • 23:15suited to review your manuscript and
  • 23:17we will do our best to ensure that
  • 23:20they actually do it by incentivizing
  • 23:23them and ultimately will provide
  • 23:25written commentary back to you.
  • 23:27And so we're excited to pilot
  • 23:29this and get it going.
  • 23:31We had a question earlier from Patrick
  • 23:34about whether the grant writing
  • 23:36course will be offered over Zoom.
  • 23:38We have offered the course
  • 23:40over Zoom in this semester.
  • 23:42I will ask Jean to consider ways that
  • 23:45we can continue to have a hybrid model,
  • 23:48especially if there are individuals
  • 23:50who wish to do this.
  • 23:52I would actually encourage people who
  • 23:54are interested in the fall section
  • 23:57of the grant writing course too.

  • 24:07to participate so that we can start
  • 24:10planning for the fall semester.

  • 24:21The next I think probably very
  • 24:23relevant thing is to create a true
  • 24:26study section and so for those of
  • 24:29you who choose not to go through the
  • 24:33grant writing program but instead
  • 24:35wish to write your grants Dinovo,
  • 24:37we're going to offer a study section,
  • 24:40and so our goal here is to provide
  • 24:42expert review and commentary for
  • 24:45investigators for submitting career
  • 24:47development and project awards.
  • 24:49And so the approach is this.
  • 24:51We're going to begin a pilot in November
  • 24:54of 2021 for the February cycle.
  • 24:56This is going to be limited exclusively
  • 24:58to Janeway society participants.
  • 24:59In this first cycle,
  • 25:00and ultimately we hope to be able to
  • 25:02offer this to all investigators with
  • 25:04the institution in subsequent cycles.
  • 25:06So 10 weeks,
  • 25:07and this is what's challenging about this,
  • 25:09but I think it's actually very
  • 25:11great because it's going to give
  • 25:13people a lot of structure,
  • 25:15so 10 weeks prior to the due date,
  • 25:17we want to draft abstract and specific games,
  • 25:19and the reason we want an abstract
  • 25:22in specific games is now.
  • 25:23Nick,
  • 25:24myself and others are going to
  • 25:25sit down and try to find who will
  • 25:28be the reviewers for your grants
  • 25:298 weeks prior to the due date.
  • 25:31We're going to want your complete
  • 25:33grants now we know that you're
  • 25:35not going to have final budgets.
  • 25:36You don't necessarily need to
  • 25:38have your letters,
  • 25:39we want you to give us everything
  • 25:41you've got and how complete it is is
  • 25:43going to be related to how good of a
  • 25:45review you're ultimately going to get.
  • 25:47We're going to have three
  • 25:49reviewers evaluate the grant,
  • 25:50so you're still going to get
  • 25:52that are 123 sort of flavor.
  • 25:53And one month prior to the due date,
  • 25:56the grants,
  • 25:57the evaluators are going to
  • 25:59actually present your grant added
  • 26:01true study section in exactly the
  • 26:03format of an NIH study section.
  • 26:05We're actually going to have a
  • 26:07videographer record the study section
  • 26:09for you so that when you receive the
  • 26:11comments from the study section,
  • 26:13you're actually going to be able to
  • 26:15look at what a study section looks like.
  • 26:18So you'll have our one present.
  • 26:20Our two supplement and our
  • 26:22three provide brief comments.
  • 26:24Then you'll also hear the commentary
  • 26:26of the assembled individuals.
  • 26:27Who are at the study section?
  • 26:29Because I think that the commentary
  • 26:31of others is study section
  • 26:34is frequently formative.
  • 26:35Reviewers will be compensated
  • 26:37with Amazon gift cards or other
  • 26:39relative swag if desired,
  • 26:41and this video comments will be
  • 26:44provided along with the written,
  • 26:46along with written comments.
  • 26:48Question is will mock study section
  • 26:50reviews be available for the R21 mechanism?
  • 26:53Yes,
  • 26:54we will be providing for all for
  • 26:57all mechanisms in this in this
  • 26:59initial in this initial cycle.

  • 27:45Awards for Technician Awards for Gap
  • 27:48funding for a variety of other things.
  • 27:51And, really,
  • 27:51you know when you have a story
  • 27:54about your success,
  • 27:55please send it to us so that we can
  • 27:58connect you with with communications
  • 28:00and we can tell your story will
  • 28:03have a newsletter in a newsletter
  • 28:05which we hope to start soon.
  • 28:08That I will highlight grant opportunities
  • 28:10and the activities of the OPSD
  • 28:13will also include some of these
  • 28:15news stories and so at this point,
  • 28:17I think that we can open to any sort of
  • 28:21more general questions that people may have.
  • 28:24We really intended the remainder of this
  • 28:26to be an opportunity for for conversation,
  • 28:29and this can be a critique of
  • 28:32what's been presented so far.
  • 28:34Aspirational things that you'd
  • 28:36like to see in the future.
  • 28:38Because really this is.
  • 28:40This is your society and we want
  • 28:42to make it useful to all of you.
  • 28:50Hi, this is Carol Adelaide,
  • 28:53just wanted to say that
  • 28:55it's great to see this.
  • 28:57I loved all the components
  • 28:59that were described,
  • 29:00particularly the grant
  • 29:02review and paste writing and
  • 29:04just want to say thanks to.
  • 29:09Organizers and leaders for putting
  • 29:11thought into things that will provide
  • 29:14will provide great support to to to
  • 29:17junior advocate role in their careers.
  • 29:21Well, thank you where it's a.
  • 29:23It's a work in progress,
  • 29:24but I'm hopeful that we'll be
  • 29:25able to do important things.
  • 29:35There's a question about postdocs in K.
  • 29:3799 stage being eligible.
  • 29:39Participate in mock study sections.
  • 29:40Yes, you know, we we.
  • 29:42We don't know what the subscribership
  • 29:44is going to be to this.
  • 29:46We hope to be able to.
  • 29:50Enable everyone who's in
  • 29:51Janeway to have access to the
  • 29:53mock study section, but again,
  • 29:54you know if you know that you're
  • 29:57going to be going in for the February
  • 29:59cycle and you want to participate,
  • 30:01state your needs now.
  • 30:02You can always say that you're
  • 30:05not going for it down the road,
  • 30:07but let us know if you're interested
  • 30:09in being a part of study sections.
  • 30:14I'm also really grateful for this.
  • 30:16This is exciting to see all these
  • 30:18resources and to see ideas cross
  • 30:20pollinating across departments,
  • 30:21ANAN levels of training.
  • 30:23One thing that I've found I've had
  • 30:25to figure out by trial and error,
  • 30:27and I think there's been a
  • 30:29lot of error along the way.
  • 30:31Is knowing how to interact with the business,
  • 30:34office and manage budgets for different kinds
  • 30:36of grants and different sources of funding.
  • 30:38Just as one example,
  • 30:39I think many of us was startup funds have
  • 30:42encountered with surprise that there are.
  • 30:45A large number of taxes on startup funds
  • 30:47that don't apply to external grants,
  • 30:49and if we'd known that we would
  • 30:51have planned differently.
  • 30:52There are also in this supply.
  • 30:54This is applied for those of us who have.
  • 30:56The YCC Junior scholar Grant
  • 30:58from internal sources,
  • 30:59and so our budgets don't cover
  • 31:00the costs that were budgeted,
  • 31:02and I think it would be really helpful
  • 31:04to have some more explicit training
  • 31:06around to the expectations around.
  • 31:08Finances at Yale.
  • 31:09As a junior scholar,
  • 31:11so you know it's actually really
  • 31:13fascinating that you bring that up because
  • 31:15people on the other side say the same thing.
  • 31:18So the folks at OSP and in the
  • 31:20business office is actually want
  • 31:22to be a participant in this,
  • 31:24because they want to help people to
  • 31:26navigate it and to and to reduce conflict.
  • 31:29And I think that one of the challenges
  • 31:31that we have is the infrastructure,
  • 31:34and the bureaucracy is so gigantic here
  • 31:36that it would be helpful if we all sort of.
  • 31:39Sort of sat down,
  • 31:42and so you know.
  • 31:44There are some resources that we will that
  • 31:47we will link to that that that provide this,
  • 31:50but I think that you know it's actually
  • 31:53very much worthwhile for us to.
  • 31:56While this may not be a first
  • 31:58Friday if we could schedule these.
  • 32:01Uh,
  • 32:01discussions to run on a regular
  • 32:04basis probably twice a year,
  • 32:06so that we can capture new folks
  • 32:08as they come in,
  • 32:10but also provide you with the contacts
  • 32:12that you need to be able to make to
  • 32:15make connections on these things.
  • 32:17But,
  • 32:18but you're right,
  • 32:19I think that artfully shifting which
  • 32:21funds are used for which aims is one
  • 32:24of these really important things.
  • 32:29I see a comment about about
  • 32:31about commonality of interests.
  • 32:33Actually, one of the reasons we actually
  • 32:36want to come into one place again,
  • 32:39and to have us and to have small
  • 32:42group settings is for all of you to
  • 32:45meet each other and for us to be able
  • 32:49to share interests and backgrounds.
  • 32:51And so ultimately we hope to highlight
  • 32:54the membership of the Genuine Society on.
  • 32:58The PSD website and will try to put
  • 33:01in enough information so that people
  • 33:04can identify their cohort within
  • 33:07the larger cohort of people who are
  • 33:10rising up in the career development
  • 33:13in the crew development space.
  • 33:17So I see multiple comments here.
  • 33:19Nick and I are going to take all the
  • 33:22comments and think about ways that
  • 33:24we can effectively address them.
  • 33:26We would also welcome ideas that you
  • 33:29guys might have in email or other formats.
  • 33:45When we apply for internal nominations,
  • 33:47we are receiving much.
  • 33:49Feedback when they have been
  • 33:51reviewed by a committee.
  • 33:53Can we improve this mechanism too?
  • 33:55And we are not receiving much
  • 33:57feedback from the committee.
  • 33:59Oh, these are.
  • 34:02I understand, I understand.
  • 34:04I understand that problem and
  • 34:07I recognize that you know,
  • 34:10I think that.
  • 34:15I think that the committee process
  • 34:16can be can be complicated and I
  • 34:18do not have a tremendous amount of
  • 34:20insight about it, but this is where.
  • 34:23You're hearing your specific
  • 34:25stories as I talk with each of you
  • 34:28is going to help me to prioritize
  • 34:30ways that ways that we can do this.
  • 34:34I and and I think that this is an
  • 34:38important point and so you know
  • 34:40Nick and I will need to, I think.
  • 34:43No where the sticking points
  • 34:45have been in which in which grant
  • 34:48mechanisms this is happened with,
  • 34:49so that we can intervene,
  • 34:51and so the more you can tell us
  • 34:53about what your experience has been,
  • 34:55the more we can try to improve it
  • 34:58for future for future applicants.
  • 35:02There was a question about how many
  • 35:04draft grants or draft manuscripts
  • 35:05will include in the mock review,
  • 35:07and is there a lot of demand from us?
  • 35:10You know, I think that.
  • 35:12Something that's inherent to the manuscript
  • 35:14writing and the grant writing programs
  • 35:16is that they are relatively demanding.
  • 35:17They actually ask that you come in.
  • 35:20You commit to doing it,
  • 35:21and that you actually get it done.
  • 35:23And so if you enter into the manuscript
  • 35:26writing program, you know it.
  • 35:27It it, we really will expect you
  • 35:29to try to complete to complete a
  • 35:31penny script over the course of,
  • 35:33and whether it's five weeks or 8 weeks,
  • 35:36we will want it to to go through
  • 35:38the process in that period of time.
  • 35:40And so if you commit to doing
  • 35:42manuscript writing.
  • 35:43We want you to do it.
  • 35:45Same thing is true for for the grant
  • 35:48writing program you know there needs
  • 35:50to be enough of a grant there for
  • 35:52us to be able to achieve successful
  • 35:55review and we will leave it to the
  • 35:57discretion of reviewers if there's
  • 35:59consensus among reviewers that was
  • 36:00provided is inadequate for review,
  • 36:02will provide that feedback back to you,
  • 36:05and so one of the beauties of
  • 36:07participating in these programs
  • 36:09is you're going to have a nearly
  • 36:12completed product.
  • 36:13Oh, if 100 people get their grants,
  • 36:15refute, how can you?
  • 36:16Then you can only comma 10.
  • 36:18How would you choose ten?
  • 36:20Well,
  • 36:20look we're making a commitment
  • 36:21to the Janeway Society.
  • 36:22I hope we have 100 are ones that
  • 36:25cover or grants to come forward.
  • 36:27And if we get 100 I'll find
  • 36:29a way to get 100 done.
  • 36:30You know Will will will will do
  • 36:32our best to accommodate everyone.
  • 36:34That's why we're not opening it to
  • 36:37the entire institution to begin with.
  • 36:39We will,
  • 36:40we will do our best and you know we
  • 36:42all have limitations and I will be
  • 36:44honest with all of you about where we
  • 36:46stand and what we can and cannot do.
  • 36:49But we'll make our best effort
  • 36:50to actually make it happen.

  • 37:03I was wondering about the
  • 37:04Mark Grant review timeline.
  • 37:05So when I write grants I need a lot
  • 37:07of time so I'm just wondering is
  • 37:09there flexibility in how soon we
  • 37:11can get the feedback or things like this?
  • 37:13We actually incorporate that
  • 37:14in our current before we submit
  • 37:16them or 'cause you mentioned
  • 37:17like accomplish structured time.
  • 37:19I'm just wondering is there any
  • 37:20room for flexibility or people may
  • 37:22want some feedback a little earlier.
  • 37:23You know let's have all these
  • 37:25other things are kind of juggling.
  • 37:27I'm just curious about that.
  • 37:29Because of all the moving parts
  • 37:32that go into the study section it.
  • 37:35That particular mechanism is pretty
  • 37:38regimented in terms of the way that
  • 37:41it goes in terms of the deadlines,
  • 37:44I think that you may be asking
  • 37:47another question, which is,
  • 37:49is it possible for us to accommodate making
  • 37:52connections with people for feedback,
  • 37:55and I think that the answer is yes,
  • 37:58so you know if you know that you would
  • 38:02benefit from the input of specific
  • 38:04individuals who are here at the institution.
  • 38:08I think that the office can be flexible in
  • 38:11the way that it provides support to you.
  • 38:13I think we still absolutely want you
  • 38:15to go through the true study section,
  • 38:18'cause I think there's a lot of
  • 38:20value in in doing that.
  • 38:21But if you want to do more pre work
  • 38:24ahead of time and have some support
  • 38:26from us that goes towards you know.
  • 38:29Incentivizing individuals to
  • 38:30provide that to you,
  • 38:32either through the weight of the office
  • 38:36or through some additional sort of.
  • 38:39You know, recognition.
  • 38:40We're happy to be flexible to
  • 38:43meet the needs of individuals.
  • 38:46Thank you.
  • 38:50The question just out of curiosity.
  • 38:52Why are non KE awarding new faculty
  • 38:55not invited to join the society?
  • 38:57It sounds like all these resources
  • 38:59would be incredibly helpful to all
  • 39:01new independent investigators and
  • 39:03even as you're absolutely right,
  • 39:04this would be something that we
  • 39:06have the aspiration up to provide
  • 39:09of providing to all investigators.
  • 39:11But we also.
  • 39:12Are creating in a way an elite society,
  • 39:15so we so putting the fact that
  • 39:17you've joined the Janeway society
  • 39:19on your CV is going to be one of
  • 39:22those early recognitions that build
  • 39:24your package for for promotion
  • 39:26and so we do want Janeway to be
  • 39:29something that people aspire to,
  • 39:30but I think that we can recognize that
  • 39:33Janeway is going to have individuals
  • 39:35are going to reach back to support
  • 39:37others and all of the resources
  • 39:40that we're talking about here we're
  • 39:42piloting with Janeway because.
  • 39:43Honestly,
  • 39:44you are the most important people right
  • 39:47now for us to lunch and to have succeed.
  • 39:50But you know,
  • 39:51we recognize that there's an urgent
  • 39:53need for resources across the
  • 39:55entire spectrum of development,
  • 39:57and it's our hope and intention
  • 39:59to do to a degree use you as the
  • 40:03experiment and then and then implement
  • 40:05more broadly as as time goes on,
  • 40:08we want to ensure that we have high
  • 40:11quality for Members of Janeway now.
  • 40:14And then ultimately,
  • 40:15as we get everything in place,
  • 40:18expands access to others.
  • 40:25The comment about a job talks and and
  • 40:29chalk talks is a very important one.
  • 40:32And and there are a number of departments
  • 40:35that are working on scientific
  • 40:38communication and scientific impact,
  • 40:41and I think that there are some
  • 40:45resources that we can provide around.
  • 40:49Around these one thing that I will
  • 40:53say is if you as an individual are
  • 40:57being invited to participate in
  • 40:59one of these competitive awards,
  • 41:03and you have a specific need,
  • 41:06please reach out to us and tell
  • 41:10us and we'll do what we can to
  • 41:14provide resources surrounding that.
  • 41:17Internal grant reviewers.
  • 41:18Many of us would benefit from
  • 41:20feedback by senior colleagues,
  • 41:21have served on an I study sections with
  • 41:23reviewers be pulled from larger your
  • 41:25community or mainly among Jamie members.
  • 41:27No, we're going to exclusively be
  • 41:29sourcing the for the grant review program.
  • 41:31This is all going to be people who
  • 41:34just made an NIH study sections.
  • 41:36We want to ensure that you're getting
  • 41:38an authentic review so that people act
  • 41:40like they're supposed to act in the
  • 41:42study section itself for the video portion,
  • 41:44as well as provide commentary in
  • 41:46the in the style and with the rigor
  • 41:48that you'd expect to get from.
  • 41:50Any other study section now mind you,
  • 41:53we're going to be having a real mixed
  • 41:55group of grants that are going to be
  • 41:58reviewed here so we won't have this
  • 42:00sort of intensity of focus amongst all
  • 42:03of the studies section participants.
  • 42:05But overall,
  • 42:05I think we will create asmira
  • 42:07facsimilies we can.
  • 42:20Terrific well, I know that the
  • 42:21thing that all of us seek more
  • 42:23than anything else is time.
  • 42:25So if I can give you 15 minutes of
  • 42:27time today, I'll consider it a success.
  • 42:30So I really look forward to
  • 42:32meeting every single one of you.

  • 42:35to have you here with us.
