Center for Medical Education

August 28, 2023
  • 00:03So just to give a graphic of where we sit,
  • 00:07of course we've got the Dean and Jessica,
  • 00:09Lucy reporting to the Dean and I report to
  • 00:12Jessica in the Center for Medical Education.
  • 00:15We have two arms and one is the CME,
  • 00:19which used to be in Yale Medicine.
  • 00:21It's moved over to the medical
  • 00:23school because of the importance
  • 00:25of education in relationship to
  • 00:28your continuing learning needs.
  • 00:30And again, you can develop courses.
  • 00:32You can work closely with us on the
  • 00:34pedagogy to have innovative courses.
  • 00:36And we have Allison Renfro,
  • 00:37who's a PhD educator heading our CME.
  • 00:41And again, we have a number of courses.
  • 00:43We're also developing online courses.
  • 00:46So it's a very rich environment
  • 00:47for all of you.
  • 00:48We also in the teaching and learning arm,
  • 00:52we offer a number of resources that I
  • 00:54wanted to just share with you because
  • 00:56what we really do is we're promoting
  • 00:59again this synergized and centralized
  • 01:02approach to educator development,
  • 01:04professional development.
  • 01:05We build on what Bob Rohrbach does with
  • 01:09his professional development and what Linda
  • 01:12and her team build and offer through OAPD.
  • 01:16We also do assessment educational technology
  • 01:19programs and we really coordinate all of
  • 01:23this to be available free to all of you,
  • 01:27your learners,
  • 01:28and they're all CME related.
  • 01:30So we have centralized many of
  • 01:32the resources and I'll go through
  • 01:34what some of the resources will
  • 01:36be available for all of you.
  • 01:38I'd almost like you to take a picture
  • 01:41of this with your phone because all
  • 01:43your CME is located through this cloud
  • 01:47learning platform and you do need to
  • 01:50sign up and have a profile and it's much
  • 01:52easier to just sign up now and then.
  • 01:55You can also have access to all
  • 01:57the courses that are CME related,
  • 01:59some being online and some being in person.
  • 02:03And if you have any questions,
  • 02:05you're welcome to follow the QR code.
  • 02:07But if you have any questions,
  • 02:08you're welcome to just send me a
  • 02:10text or e-mail and I'll answer it.
  • 02:11And especially you might be
  • 02:13interested in saying,
  • 02:13Gee,
  • 02:14I noticed that there are no CME
  • 02:16courses in epilepsy.
  • 02:18I'd love to start one or in Parkinson's.
  • 02:21We're starting a new center and again
  • 02:24thinking through how would you like
  • 02:26to really let your research and your
  • 02:29scholarship that your team are really
  • 02:31providing become worldwide and really
  • 02:33start globally because we could also
  • 02:36be offering some online programs.
  • 02:41So the center I highlight,
  • 02:43I'm highlighting three of our faculty here.
  • 02:47We offer educator development and again,
  • 02:50that's very centralized and I'll
  • 02:51go through some of the aspects.
  • 02:53It's for you as an educator,
  • 02:55whether you're teaching in your lab,
  • 02:58whether you're teaching residents,
  • 03:00medical students, fellows,
  • 03:01We have a number of educator
  • 03:04development programs.
  • 03:05Michael Green, who you see here,
  • 03:07heads our assessment programs.
  • 03:09He's really looking at student
  • 03:11assessment and how we can do that.
  • 03:13He also does research in this area.
  • 03:15So again, if there's a particular
  • 03:17area and this afternoon you'll be
  • 03:19hearing about the various tracks.
  • 03:21But if you're on the clinician,
  • 03:23educator, scholar track,
  • 03:24you have the opportunity to be doing
  • 03:26research and scholarship in any of
  • 03:28these areas and we're there to help you.
  • 03:31Educational technology.
  • 03:32Gary Laden,
  • 03:32he has expertise in this area to
  • 03:35really think through if you're using
  • 03:38technology in your learning environment
  • 03:40with your primarily medical students,
  • 03:42but it could be your residents.
  • 03:44And John and Candela really
  • 03:46heads our faculty evaluations,
  • 03:48our program evaluation
  • 03:50and curricular evaluation.
  • 03:52So again, his that area of expertise.
  • 03:54And again, at any point in time,
  • 03:56you can come and consult with anyone of us.
  • 04:00What we've noticed over the various years,
  • 04:02we started a teaching and Learning
  • 04:04Center in 2012 after our first
  • 04:06educational strategic plan.
  • 04:07And more recently,
  • 04:08we have become the Center
  • 04:10for Medical Education,
  • 04:12and we include all of this.
  • 04:13So it's more of a centralized
  • 04:15resource for all of the faculty
  • 04:17throughout all the departments,
  • 04:191 area.
  • 04:19And I wanted to just highlight for
  • 04:21all of you is your development as
  • 04:24educators and this is really important
  • 04:26for all of us here at Yale because
  • 04:28we're all teaching whether again as
  • 04:30I say you're in the lab and you're
  • 04:33doing one-on-one or you're in the
  • 04:35clinic or in the hospital setting.
  • 04:36We have a fellowship,
  • 04:38and part of the fellowship
  • 04:40is a couple of hours a week.
  • 04:41You're appointed to the fellowship by
  • 04:44your chair, and it's a selection process.
  • 04:47We accept 14 fellows.
  • 04:49So again,
  • 04:49if you're wanting to sort of dip into
  • 04:52the area of really understanding how
  • 04:54to do scholarship in medical education,
  • 04:57this would be a wonderful opportunity
  • 04:59to talk with your division chief
  • 05:01or your department chair and they
  • 05:02could put your name forward.
  • 05:04If you want to pursue it in more detail,
  • 05:07in 2017,
  • 05:08I started the Master of Health Science
  • 05:13Medical Education Pathway and we've
  • 05:16had over 20 faculty in the program.
  • 05:18We have one or two residents.
  • 05:20It's just one of my men.
  • 05:22I come to work every day and it's like,
  • 05:24oh, I love my fellowship.
  • 05:25I love this master's program.
  • 05:27We accept about 6 faculty into the program
  • 05:30every year and it's a twoyear program.
  • 05:33You have 35% protected time that
  • 05:35it is required to do the research.
  • 05:38But again,
  • 05:38if you're wanting to be and again
  • 05:40you're going to have a fabulous session
  • 05:41with the faculty this afternoon on the
  • 05:44CES track, If you're on that track,
  • 05:46scholarship and research is required.
  • 05:49Many of you will be doing
  • 05:50that in the clinical area.
  • 05:51But what Yale has done is expanded
  • 05:54to accept that you can do research in
  • 05:57education and scholarship in this area.
  • 05:59And so the program focuses on,
  • 06:01we have courses that we offer and
  • 06:04then the scholarship in this area.
  • 06:06So we also have a medical
  • 06:08education discussion series.
  • 06:09We've kept that online.
  • 06:10We've started it during COVID
  • 06:12online before it was in person,
  • 06:14and the faculty find it so easy,
  • 06:15they can hop on to these sessions.
  • 06:18It's an hour and the first one
  • 06:20that I'm going to be doing in
  • 06:22the fall is on microaggressions.
  • 06:24Again, thinking through as a strategy,
  • 06:26if you identify a microaggression,
  • 06:28how do you then as a faculty member might
  • 06:31be just a bystander or an upstander?
  • 06:33How do you respond to it?
  • 06:34What are the strategies?
  • 06:36We also have something with ChatGPT.
  • 06:38We have two medical students
  • 06:39have just written a paper and
  • 06:41they're working with the faculty.
  • 06:42So we highlight certain
  • 06:44areas throughout the year.
  • 06:45You're welcome to come to all of them.
  • 06:47We'll make sure,
  • 06:48if you want to on our mailing list,
  • 06:50that you're there,
  • 06:51that you're all welcome and
  • 06:53they're all CME accredited.
  • 06:55We also have a Yale Medical education
  • 06:59series and you see this Dana Dunn,
  • 07:02who's an infectious disease
  • 07:04associate professor.
  • 07:05She's also in our center and Dana is
  • 07:08heading this new series where we again,
  • 07:11they'll be online.
  • 07:12They're on Fridays,
  • 07:12noon to one and you can pop in
  • 07:14and just do a couple of them,
  • 07:16but maybe you might want to do 3 because
  • 07:18we have a little mini course within them.
  • 07:21So again,
  • 07:21what we're really trying to provide is
  • 07:24a foundation for you to be successful
  • 07:26in your educator roles at Yale.
  • 07:30You see also Nanani,
  • 07:32who's an ophthalmologist is
  • 07:34in one of the pictures also.
  • 07:37So I would like you to mark your
  • 07:40calendar and please plan to attend.
  • 07:42Every year we have a Medical education
  • 07:44day where we gather our entire
  • 07:47community of educators together and
  • 07:49we usually have a keynote person.
  • 07:52Last year,
  • 07:53it was Doctor Kevin Eva from
  • 07:55University of British Columbia,
  • 07:56a phenomenal researcher.
  • 07:58He talked about optimizing the value
  • 08:01of judgment in performance assessment
  • 08:04and it was a phenomenal talk.
  • 08:06We have posters, for example.
  • 08:08You might be mentoring someone
  • 08:10who's very interested in doing
  • 08:12a poster in education.
  • 08:13And this year,
  • 08:14I'm very excited to say as of yesterday,
  • 08:17we're going to be in person.
  • 08:19So this is a a change the past
  • 08:21couple of years with COVID.
  • 08:22We've been doing it online and we
  • 08:26have a phenomenal keynote speaker.
  • 08:29Allison Wayland,
  • 08:29who's head of the group on educational
  • 08:32Affairs at the AA MC is joining us
  • 08:34this year to really think through
  • 08:37issues around medical education,
  • 08:42the other area.
  • 08:43And we talked, I talked a little bit
  • 08:45about this in the awards this morning.
  • 08:48But it is something to think about,
  • 08:49because in the centre we have a large
  • 08:52group who actually selects the awards.
  • 08:55But you can nominate A peer,
  • 08:57you can be nominated yourself.
  • 08:59And the three awards that are presented,
  • 09:02and it's very prestigious at commencement,
  • 09:04are a Bomb Fog prize for teaching.
  • 09:07And there's one for basic science
  • 09:09and also clinical science.
  • 09:10It's something for you to start being
  • 09:12aware of as part of our community.
  • 09:14And then we have a humanism award
  • 09:16and then a Feinstein award.
  • 09:18And these are what we actually do.
  • 09:21One person will receive each of these awards,
  • 09:24but many of you are nominated.
  • 09:26And what we do is we send
  • 09:28out a letter to you,
  • 09:29your mentors and your department chairs
  • 09:31that you were nominated for these awards.
  • 09:34And we have the comments,
  • 09:35the comments.
  • 09:35Honestly, when I read them,
  • 09:37I have 97 letters I'm going to be sending
  • 09:39out this weekend to people who are nominated.
  • 09:41They're just beautiful words to
  • 09:44describe the impact that you have
  • 09:46on our community of learners,
  • 09:48from residents to medical students.
  • 09:54So when you really think
  • 09:56of what is the center,
  • 09:57it is a academic home for all of you.
  • 10:01As the Dean said this morning,
  • 10:03we we don't want to be siloed.
  • 10:05And what the Center for
  • 10:06Medical Education really does,
  • 10:07it brings all of you together,
  • 10:08whether it's in the various
  • 10:11sessions that we offer the
  • 10:13fellowship or the master's program.
  • 10:14We across all disciplines,
  • 10:16work together to be the best
  • 10:18educators that we can be.
  • 10:20So thank you very much.
  • 10:22Any questions at all?
